  • Heavy jet approaches

    Hi,

I live about 12 nm south of Schiphol and I have noticed that most planes approaching Schiphol come over us at about 2500-3500 feet. However, heavy planes such as 747s fly over us at around 1800-2500 feet, consistently lower than the rest.

Until I found FR24 I thought that it was down to me thinking they just seemed that way, but now I see it in real numbers. Does anyone know why heavy jets approach at a lower altitude? The combination of four big engines and lower altitude makes for pretty loud fly-overs and I would have thought for noise nuisance reasons they would keep them higher, so I assume there is a good reason for this.

    Thanks!
