Superman might be fast, but he is a fictional character – here is DARPA’s very own Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 which is set to take to the skies today, where this experimental vehicle is tipped to hit Mach 20 – which is 20 times the speed of sound. The amazing speed at which it cuts through the airspace means this aircraft is capable of reaching anywhere in the world within a single hour. Don’t you as a frequent traveler wish that your trans-continental flight would also be that speedy?

NASA Flying Into Space Commercially With Virgin, For The Very First Time
Not Mach 20 but in anyway ;
We knew Virgin Galactic had hopes of using its capacious SpaceShipTwo-class reusable spaceplanes for more than just joyrides into zero-g, but NASA's new contract with the fledgling space company is a milestone for the entire business, as well as Richard Branson's wackiest venture. As Virgin notes, "this arrangement marks the first time that NASA has contracted with a commercial partner to provide flights into space on a suboribtal spacecraft."

Lockheed Hypersonic Jet Crashes in Pacific After Hitting Mach 20
An unmanned hypersonic aircraft made by Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) crashed into the Pacific Ocean after reaching about 20 times the speed of sound and flying for more than nine minutes, a Pentagon agency said.
The experimental Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2, or HTV-2, lifted off today in a Minotaur IV rocket made by Orbital Sciences Corp. (ORB) at 7:45 a.m. local time from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, according the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is funding the program and overseeing the tests. The agency announced the launch and mission updates on Twitter.

Hypersonic glider' capable of 13,000 mph speeds
In a story that's likely to catch the interest of many aviation enthusiasts, The Associated Press reports the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) "says in Twitter postings that its unmanned Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle-2 (HTV-2) was launched Thursday atop a rocket, successfully separated from the booster and entered the mission's glide phase.
