China Eastern Drops 787 Order for 737s on Delay,

Oct. 18 (Bloomberg) -- China Eastern Airlines Corp. dropped an order for 24 Boeing Co. 787 Dreamliners in favor of 45 smaller 737s after the larger jet’s delivery was delayed and a weakening economy hurt demand for long-haul air travel.
The carrier will pay “significantly” less than the 2008 catalog price of $3.3 billion for the 737s and it will get a “certain amount of indemnity” from Boeing, the airline said in a statement yesterday, without elaboration. The basic prices for the 737 and 787 orders are “comparable,” it said. The Shanghai-based airline is also returning five A340-300s to Airbus SAS in exchange for 15 smaller wide-body A330s

Airbus leads Boeing in both airliner deliveries and orders

Thanks to the popularity of its re-engined A320 family of jets, Airbus has opened up a huge lead on Boeing in their annual airline orders race.
Net orders for Airbus aircraft this year through September now stand at 1,038 planes compared with Boeing's 425.
The big difference between the two is Airbus' A320neo, a new version of its single-aisle A320 family that has a nine-month headstart on Boeing's re-engined 737, the 737 MAX.
Boeing delayed making a decision on whether to build an all-new single-aisle plane or to re-engine the 737 until American Airlines forced the company's hand in late summer. Boeing and Airbus split and order for jets from that Fort Worth-based carrier.
Boeing's total orders don't include several hundred 737 MAX aircraft it says airlines have made tentative committments to, but haven't yet signed formal orders.

Arik heads back to Boeing with 747-8I order

Arik Air's order for two Boeing 747-8 Intercontinentals is the latest step in the Nigerian carrier's on-off relationship with the newest incarnation of the iconic airliner.

The order, worth $635 million at list prices, was disclosed yesterday. It had previously appeared in Boeing's order totals as an unidentified customer dating from 15 June.

Arik's interest in the 747-8I goes back to May 2008 when it signed a letter of intent for three of the type. This commitment was firmed up at the Farnborough air show in July that year with the order increased to four aircraft with one option.

However, as programme delays mounted the carrier brought in capacity from elsewhere - notably Airbus A340-500s - and began to talk about the possibility of ordering A380s instead of the revamped 747. Eventually talk of the order for the 747-8Is was dropped.

For Boeing, while not a huge shot in the arm for the programme - which has orders for 27 aircraft from 3 carriers (excluding VIP variants) - the order at least represents progress after the rows that have dogged the 747-8 Freighter in recent weeks.

Arik has an order backlog of eight 737-800s and seven 787-9s.

Arik Air orders two Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental aircraft

Boeing and Nigeria’s Arik Air have announced a deal for two 747-8 Intercontinental aircraft. The order is valued at $635 million at list prices and was previously attributed to an unidentified customer on Boeing’s website.
The order was announced during a signing ceremony at the Corporate Council for Africa’s8th Biennial U.S.-Africa Business Summit in Washington, D.C.

Qantas, Airbus seal largest single order in Australian

Qantas Airlines has finalized a $9 billion deal to purchase 110 of Airbus' A320 aircraft as it gears for its expansion plans into Asia.

"The firm order for 78 A320neo and 32 A320s is the largest single order in Australian aviation history by aircraft units," Airbus said in a statement on Thursday.
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said the deal reinforces the airline's plans to launch two new Asian brands, including a low-cost tie-up with Japan Airlines and Mitsubishi Corp, as well as a separate joint-venture premium airline.
"The Airbus A320 will be the launch aircraft for Qantas' new premium airline based in Asia and will support Jetstar's expansion plans -- including the establishment of Jetstar Japan," the Qantas CEO said.

Qatar Airways to announce A380 deal at Dubai show

Seattle: Qatar Airways has signed a fresh order for additional A380 aircraft, the airline's chief executive said here.
The new order for a "few more" superjumbos will be on top of the five aircraft that the airline previously ordered.
Akbar Al Baker, chief executive of Qatar Airways, said they will officially announce the deal in the upcoming Dubai Airshow.
"We ordered the A380s for a specific reason and we found the number we initially ordered to be insufficient. So we ordered a few more," Akbar Al Baker told Gulf News in Seattle on Friday

Lufthansa snaps up 2 additional airbus a380s

Lufthansa will be flying two more Airbus A380 superjumbos on long-haul routes sooner than expected after snapping them up as part of an order worth about EUR€1 billion (USD$1.36 billion) at list prices.

The airline, already Europe's largest customer for the A380, was offered the additional planes at short notice, a spokesman said on Thursday.
Lufthansa has already ordered 15 A380s, eight of which have been delivered. It was due to take delivery of the next five in 2015, but the two in Thursday's order are set to be delivered in 2014, the spokesman said.
The order includes one Airbus A330-300, which will be used on long-haul routes, four Airbus A320s and five smaller Embraer 195s for its regional fleet, with the planes to be delivered in stages from 2012.
The group will fund the planes through its own cash and external sources, such as leasing or a sale and leaseback.

Airbus Says NO Exit From Royal Air Maroc Fleet

PARIS -(Dow Jones)- A spokesman for Aircraft manufacturer Airbus, a unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. (EAD.FR), said Wednesday the company would be "surprised" if Royal Air Maroc was to force it out of its fleet in favor of its U.S. rival Boeing Co. (BA).
"In order to use our planes, they had to develop a certain expertise and partners. We would be surprised if they stopped using these aircraft," he said, adding that Royal Air Maroc had been operating four A321's for the past eight years.
French daily La Tribune reported Wednesday that Royal Air Maroc was planning to stop using the four Airbus planes, citing unnamed sources close to Airbus, and that the Moroccan Airline would sign a 15-year exclusivity contract with U.S. aircraft manufacturer Boeing. This would be discussed during French President Nicolas Sarkozy's visit to Morocco on Thursday, the paper reported.

Avianca orders four A330F aircraft for cargo unit

Colombia-based Avianca, part of the airline group AviancaTaca Holdings, has ordered four A330-200 freighters, Airbus announced Tuesday.
The new aircraft, to be operated by Avianca’s cargo subsidiary Tampa, will replace its cargo fleet and play a key role in expanding Avianca’s international cargo business, Airbus said. Avianca will announce its engine choice at a later date.
Avianca purchased Tampa Cargo in 2008 (ATW Daily News, April 9, 2008).

Emirates sees more orders at Dubai airshow ; Nov-2011

DUBAI: Emirates, Dubai's fast-growing state airline, will likely place more orders at the Dubai airshow in November, its chairman said on Tuesday.The carrier, the biggest customer for the Airbus A380 superjumbo with 90 orders, has previously said it planned to expand its fleet to eventually include 120 of the jets.
"It is more positive that we might sign something," Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum said when asked about the likelihood of aircraft purchases at the airshow.

Airbus Looks at Building 50 A320s a Month as Forecast Is Raised

Sept. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Airbus SAS said it’s looking at accelerating production of its single-aisle A320 series to 50 planes a month after projections for Asian economic growth prompted a 7.5 percent increase in its 20-year sales forecast.
Chief Operating Officer John Leahy said he’s “confident” Airbus will soon decide to switch to building 44 narrowbody planes a month, two more than the level planned for the end of 2012, and that it’s also “studying” the still higher rate.
Airbus forecasts that 27,800 jets valued at $3.5 trillion will be required between now and 2030, including 19,200 single- aisle planes, according to its latest Global Market Forecast released today. U.S. rival Boeing Co. sees demand for 30,900 planes over the same period and has said it will need to build 60 jets a month by the end of the decade to meet demand.
