    MH370 Tomnod discussion

    Hi,
    tried to follow your instructions and failed. For example, after replacing "challenge" with "api" in http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...ean/map/124050 (random selection) nothing changes((( What am I doing wrong?

    I found out that there is actually a way to identify where in the world your tomnod map is: replace "challenge" in the url with "api". This will give you a page containin the latitude and longitude. Then try a site like http://itouchmap.com/latlong.html to see where this is.

    I agree with other tomnod comments about having the ability to see where you are looking. I think crowdsourcing is a great tool but its limitations are very frustrating and it should be exploited much further, in several ways:

    1. on the overview tile, colour each tile according to how many views they have had (grayscale perhaps).. then users can seek out tiles with few views.

    2. show a small image of where the overview tile is in the world.

    3. persuade other satellite imaging companies to contribute to the images so that much more ground can be covered.

    4. get some image recognition going: machine learning/algorithms.

    5. promote, promote, promote, via the hundreds of otherwise pointless articles written every day. Even my tech-savvy, software engineer husband hadn't heard of tomnod .

    Apologies for any naive assumptions these suggestions contain.

    It's all so frustrating.

    Hi again,

    there is some strange shapes on those maps :

    http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...ocean/map/5064

    http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...ocean/map/2957

    http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...ocean/map/2885

    http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...ocean/map/4490

    http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...ocean/map/4627 (round shape on the left)

    http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...ocean/map/5019 (long vertical shape on the right)

    **Earlier today I saw a shape that looked similar to an engine but didnt tag it,I'll try to find it and then post it,though in this case it would probably have sunk?

    is the map doing this strange texture or my computer?

    http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...ean/map/143920

    Now they are saying that Malasysian Airlines was carrying highly flammable lithium batteries.

    Hi there,

    I've just tried it on this link http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...ocean/map/5191, so by replacing challenge with api I get this link http://www.tomnod.com/nod/api/mh370_...ocean/map/5191. When I go to that address the details are contained in a single line of text at the top of a blank page. Hope this works for you. It may be that different areas need different parts of the url replacing (I just found this tip of a webpage I read somewhere)?

    ... and I get this {"id":124050,"overlay_id":1293,"lat":4.544036,"lon ":90.661958,"status":1,"msg":"Retrieved map ID = 124050"}

    on the page example you gave.

    Nice find! And it works.
    E.g. original url being http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...ocean/map/5533
    Doing the replace in the url http://www.tomnod.com/nod/api/mh370_...ocean/map/5533
    gives something like
    {"id":5533,"overlay_id":1283,"lat":6.839044,"lon": 95.124514,"status":1,"msg":"Retrieved map ID = 5533"}
    Tap lat and lon into http://itouchmap.com/latlong.html and you know where you are.

    aha... got the same line, BUT: what exactly must be inserted into http://itouchmap.com/latlong.html? Not the whole line, right? Only which exactly parts? I am really slow today)))

    I know 98% of the time I dont trust completely what they say plus most of the time they dramatize things. But just wanted to update anyway.

    In image the strange shapes I mentioned previously , Note: they appear bigger because I zoomed them,trying to find a shape similar to a turbine engine I saw earlier, anyway if I find any further strange shapes will post it.
