Useful Tips & Basestation Programs for FR24-box Feeders & How To Configure Pt.1

    Ethernet options

If you are or have been selected to host a FR24 system you will find this thread interesting in getting to know more about your system.

The receiver is an ethernet device that has a fingerprint, a MAC address.

When connected to a modem through an ethernet port, it is able to connect directly with the internet your modem is connected to.

The ethernet cable provided is 5 meters so that requires the FR24 receiver to be within 5 meters of the modem. If that is not possible you have two options.

    1. At a computer networking location near you, you can have a cable with male ends made for you for your required length. If they don't have Cat6 thats ok, Cat5se will work fine to connect the FR24 receiver directly to the modem.

    2. If you are on a home wireless home network thats fine also if the closest wireless home networked computer is on 24/7. You can use the ethernet port on that pc.

In order for the FR24 receiver to call home you will need to assign an IP address for the receiver and in that computers operating system TCP/IP change the properties to an IP like example 192.168.0.1 and specify the DNS addresses for it to reach the modem. The DNS will be the wireless address of the modem.

Each wireless modem has a range of addresses that it expects to be on its network like 192.168.xxx.xxx. Select an unused network IP within that range..

Now that you have done this in the computers networking connections you will see the connection you have created and one for your wireless connection. Using the CTRL key for Windows, hold it down and click on each, the wireless connection and the new connection. When they are both highlighted right click and select Bridge Connections. Each one will be bridged and you will see new icons in the system tray. If one says disconnected select View/Refresh.

Your FR24 receiver is set to call home every 5 seconds.

What if that PC is connected to a network that has security? The FR24 receiver connected to that computers ethernet port will be assumed to have met the security requirements of the network because it is using the PCs credentials.

What are the caveats of using a networked wireless connected PC?

    1. Wear and tear of running 24/7 and increase in thermal issues due to dust being sucked up into the computer.

    2. Increased electrical cost of running the PC 24/7 vs the small cost of using the direct modem connection.

Look up homeplugs/power line adaptors John. Pass the network connection over your home electrical power wiring.

Yes that's possible but bits and pieces cost extra money and many, like myself, hosting in the third world just have to use what they have.
