First charges brought over Smolensk air disaster

The first charges relating to the the 2010 Smolensk air disaster have been made, with two officers from the 36th Special Air Transport Regiment standing accused of “failing to fulfil duties”.

The move comes in the wake of the publication of Poland's official report on the disaster, which was released on 29 July, into the cause of the crash in western Russia that killed all 96 on board including President Lech Kaczynski.
Poland's military took much of the blame for its handling of the doomed flight, and Minister of Defence Bogdan Klich was obliged to resign.
The 36th Special Air Transport Regiment – which organised the flight - was singled out as especially culpable, and it was disbanded within a week of publication of the report.

(Reuters) - Poland exhumed Monday the first victim of last year's plane crash in west

(Reuters) - Poland exhumed Monday the first victim of last year's plane crash in western Russia, which killed the country's president and 95 others, because of concerns that the Russian autopsy may be faulty.
The Polish state plane carrying President Lech Kaczynski crashed while trying to land in thick fog in the city of Smolensk. Disputes between Warsaw and Moscow over responsibility for the disaster has badly damaged ties between the two.
"Today in the morning the exhumation has taken place and the body of Zbigniew Wassermann was taken out of the coffin because of doubts over the autopsy prepared by the Russian side," said Zbigniew Rzepa, spokesman for the Polish military prosecutors office, which is conducting an investigation into the crash.

Any Air crash is always bad news, but this one certainly succeeded in raising some important questions.
An interesting thread this one, with equally interesting replies.

EU urged to intervene in Polish air crash 'cover up'

A public hearing in parliament was told that 'serious doubts' exist about the result of an investigation into the Polish plane crash in 2010 which killed the country's president.

Some 96 Poles were killed in the plane crash Smolensk in Russia, including Polish president Lech Kaczynski, two years ago this April.

The packed hearing on Wednesday was told that the crash "did not have the right to occur".

A report by the Poland law and justice delegation in parliament which was circulated at the event said, "Government aircrafts of civilised countries, flown by well trained pilots used to difficult conditions do not normally crash. We must know how this one did."

The hearing, organised by the European Conservatives and Reformists group, was told that "with the second anniversary of the crash approaching it can be safely concluded that both Russian and Polish governmental reports have neglected to investigate the circumstances of the crash."
