  • 2-REG aircraft

Watch out for the new "2-REG" aircraft. The Channel Islands Registry (based in Guernsey) launched today with 2-LATE 2-OFUS 2-PLAY & 2-HIGH although as single engine piston you'll be unlikely to see them although possible if the owners have fitted the right kit. However it's only a matter of time until exec jet and bigger (not commercial) planes start flitting about.

The 2-REG: a new and exciting off-shore aircraft registry (SGI Aviation will manage the Channel Islands Aircraft Registry with States of Guernsey.)

"The moment that aircraft owners can register their aircraft in the Channel Islands draws nearer.

The Channel Islands Aircraft Registry (CIAR) is a new offshore registry based in Guernsey that will be different from other offshore registries. It will offer new and exciting features to owners of private jets and business aircraft as well as lessors of transport aircraft in between leases.

It will be the principal registry for residents of the Channel Islands and will be open to owners of large aircraft (> 5,700 kg) around the world which are not used for commercial air transport.

Key features of the CIAR will be quick and reliable service at competitive costs.

The safety standards that the CIAR will apply are on a par with the best in the world. The CIAR will accept aircraft based on European (EASA), US or Canadian certification standards with only one airworthiness inspection, thus providing more flexibility than other registries. Crew licensing and approval of maintenance organisations will largely be done on a validation basis, so reducing efforts and costs for aircraft owners and users.

The CIAR will use the nationality mark ‘2' and will be known as the ‘2-REG', offering unique registration mark combinations to its customers. A premium registration system is currently under development.

The CIAR will be operated under a Private-Public Partnership, where the Director of Civil Aviation of Guernsey represents the public sector and SGI Guernsey Ltd. is the private party. SGI Guernsey has been established on the island of Guernsey as a wholly owned subsidiary of Amsterdam-based SGI Aviation Services.

Law-making on the island to enable the Registry is in good progress. Public launch of the registry is expected on 5 December 2013 and registration reservations will then be taken. It is expected that the first aircraft bearing a 2-REG can be spotted in the air before the end of this year.

SGI is excited about this new registry and confident that it will attract many aircraft. Watch this site for more information about the 2-REG and the possibility to make reservations for registration marks of your aircraft."

Thanks Radiosutch for reminding me of the New Register, we will be able to add them to the Database once the Hex codes are known.

Jersey bid to block Guernsey CI aircraft registry branding.

"JERSEY is trying to block Guernsey from using the name Channel Islands when it launches its aircraft registry tomorrow.

And the Island authorities are prepared to take legal action if necessary to stop Guernsey using the Channel Islands Aircraft Registry branding.

Jersey announced yesterday it is to press ahead with plans to get its own aircraft registry off the ground.

The move to create a Jersey registry has come after talks to establish a joint Channel Islands one broke down in September and it would appear that a significant rift has developed.

Jersey Chief Minister Ian Gorst and Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean made direct representations to Guernsey’s Chief Minister Peter Harwood and Commerce and Employment Minister Kevin Stewart."

          2-REG

It doesn't look like Jersey will be taking the threatened 'legal action' anytime soon. The Jersey minister admitted on TV last evening that they had checked with the Guernsey Company Registrar and IP Registry and had it confirmed Guernsey could use the 'Channel Islands' as a trading name quite legally. So the Channel Islands aviation register 2-REG joins the Channel Islands Air Search, The Channel Islands Stock Exchange, The Channel Islands University to name but a few organisations based in sunny Guernsey. (we also have the only Channel Islands based English league footie team).

This morning the Guernsey minister announced it wasn't too late for Jersey to join in if they wanted. I guess Jersey have burned their boats now so I don't see that happening.

I've heard that the Jersey registry are going to use "4", so I can't wait to see PLAY overhead.

          Yes taking the Michael...
