Aircraft type question

Lets start with a Boeing 747:

Boeing 747-406F(ER)
Boeing 747-412F (SCD)
Boeing 747-446/BCF

Boeing 747-8HVF

I know what a -400 and a -8 is. F usually is Freight, M is combi, as a lot can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_747

But is there any site that explains the: 406, 412, 446, HVF etc...?
Or if anyone could explain?


... and does it work the same for Airbus?

I know that atleast for Airbus the numbers stand for which type of engine the aircraft has.

For example:
A320-231 IAE Model V2500-A1
A320-232 IAE Model V2527-A5

I'm not sure about Boeing.

For Boeing, I think it's the 'customer code'

As an example, a B747-436 would be a Boeing 747-400 configured for customer code 36, which is British Airways
A Ryanair B737-800 would be a B737-8AS

By 'configured' I mean things like seat upholstery, cabin decor etc
