Helicopter drone tours fire affected Lithgow
Stunning drone video has emerged of residents and fire crews on the ground at fire-affected Lithgow in the central tablelands of NSW.
Watch the vid, it speaks for itself...
.. A stunning 'bird's eye view' of the fires. Of note is the railway viaduct early on in the clips. This is known locally as the Zig-Zag Railway, the original railway crossing of the Blue Mountains east of Bell, no longer in use except as a tourist attraction. Also of note is the random nature of the fires- how they will burn one building and leave another totally untouched. It also gives you an idea of the magnitude of the battle the firies faced in confronting the fires.
... and the smoke is shrouding Sydney again this morning.
Regards

Fortunately that particular fire didnt result in too many lost properties but your point is valid. The State Government is lining up already to 'request' that the Federal Government cover any of the costs involved with regard to that particular fire (that's the State Mine Fire out of Lithgow). Whilst it did burn a tremendous area it wasnt connected directly to the Springwood fire where in the region of 200 properties were lost and a further 80 odd were severely damaged.
For anyone living in the area it has been interesting to listen to the aerial operations in the fire region on 125.45MHz/132.55 MHz and out of RAAF Base Richmond (Tower 135.50MHz) and Bankstown Airport (Tower 132.80MHz) and is still on-going.

Firefight air forces bolstered for battle
THE federal government has managed to bolster its firefighting aircraft capabilities ahead of what looks set to be a disastrous fire season, as the states move to embrace the national scheme.
The National Aerial Firefighting Centre yesterday confirmed it had been able to increase aircraft numbers - and importantly the number of days states were provided with aircraft - having just completed its five-year tenders.

Mountain folk grateful Elvis back to save buildings
JEFF Oliver was the man at the heart of aerial firefighting operations as fires blazed out of control in the NSW Blue Mountains this week, including a pair of "Elvis" style Aircrane helicopters.
The NSW Fire Services Air Attack supervisor said six helicopters had been used to battle the blaze in the Blue Mountains suburb of Faulconbridge, where spotfires had raged out of control on Wednesday, threatening homes.

Whilst you cant track the firefighting aircraft on FR24 there is one aircraft here in Sydney that you can. It's the AS 350B2 Squirrel operated by the New South Wales Rural Fire Service ('NFO' on the map). Usually seen operating out of RAAF base Richmond during the fire season.
