  • DC3 N431HM in Stornoway

Driving passed the airport this afternoon I spotted an unusual visitor to the Western Isles, a DC3 parked on the apron in front of the hanger on the airfield.
On closer inspection, and not too close as you can see from the photo taken with my mobile (the only camera I had available so sorry for the poor quality ), it was marked as "Froissair" on the nose but with not visible side registration.
I did a search when I got home I think it's N431HM (Mode S: A52790) as all the photos match this aircraft but I've not go this one in my logs so I can't be 100% sure, unless it doesn't carry a transponder? I did find images of it taken at West Midlands Airport on 31st July though.

Being here is Stornoway, I can only assume it's heading back to the U.S, most likely via Iceland, Greenland and on the Canadian East Coast.

One of my favorite Aircraft the DC3, she flew over Merseyside a few days ago and more than likely heading your way.

That is the correct Hex: http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinqu...umbertxt=431HM

According to Airframes it has not flown since yesterday: http://www.airframes.org/reg/n431hm

      Mine too.
When I was at school (back in the late 70's) I used to go spotting at Southampton and there were a couple of DC3's that did a weekly cattle run from Southampton to France.

        Hello!

I came across this when doing some Google searching, so though i would give you a reply!

Your bang on right with the registration! I have some more pictures of it from a little closer, (quite often work down at the hanger) if you are interested?

            Great video!! Thanks!

Like I said I came across this when doing some Google searching on the DC3, so not sure whats involved in uploading pictures to this, so might be easier to just give you a link to my flicker page? It may be better showing you them there as flickr keeps the quality when to load pictures

The first 11 pictures, hope you like them!

              Very nice images Calum.
Do you know if they're waiting for a weather window before heading West and any news on departure would be handy (by PM if you'd rather).

                Thanks

Am not sure to be honest, I was told they came for 3 days, which would mean they should have left today, but not to sure if they left today or not?

They were still there at 15:00 this afternoon when I went past the airport and I can't see them leaving with the wind gusting 45 mph into the evening.
Maybe tomorrow or Monday then, although I'm working so no photos from me.

From what Airframes says its still on the ground "N431HM recently seen 2013-08-01 as flight N431HM." http://www.airframes.org/reg/n431hm

It departed today (8th) at around 13:00 and dropped off my radar at 13:42.
I was at work so I have no idea where it was headed.

Nice to see it in Stornoway though, I wish we had a few more visitors like that but most seem to head for Wick, even though it means longer over water.

                        Hi,

Talking of the DC3 i saw this a while back,

An action-packed series following people around the world who take extraordinary risks to earn a living.

and we get the Hump when our flight is a bit late!

Scroll down to the DC3, there are some other interesting films as well but not aircraft related.

                        Enjoy,

                        Roger.

PS. the DC3 was the first aircraft i flew in back in the 1950's when i was in the ATC and it's always been my favorite.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
