    Early reports are stating that the tail plane which appeared to be at an awkward angle (or perhaps the aircraft) appeared to separate just prior to or on landing.

    Judging by these photos things could have been a lot worse.

    Radio traffic from the tower, sounds like about 40 seconds is when they see the crash.

    further news;

    Two dead, dozens injured in San Fran plane crash.
    Two people died, dozens were injured and as many as 60 remained unaccounted for after a Boeing 777 coming in from South Korea crash landed at San Francisco International Airport.

    It was unclear what caused the Asiana Airlines plane to crash just after noon local time, but officials said terrorism had been ruled out. TV news footage showed the top of the fuselage was burned away and the entire tail gone. One engine appeared to have broken away and pieces of the tail were strewn about the runway.

    NTSB Twitter:
    * The throttles were advanced a few seconds prior to impact and the engines appear to respond normally.
    * The data indicate that the throttles were at idle and the airspeed slowed below target approach speed during the approach. #Asiana 214
    * FDR contained 1400 parameters and captured the entire flight.
    * Preliminary results revealed: 24 hours of recorded data.
    * An initial review of FDR data was conducted.
    * Call to go around made approx. 1.5-sec prior to impact.
    * Sound of stick shaker began approx. 4-sec prior to impact.
    * Target speed for the approach was 137 knots.
    * The flight was cleared for the visual approach to RWY 28L, which is confirmed by the crew.
    * Recording began in cruise flight.
    * Preliminary results revealed: 2 hour recording...good quality.
    * An initial review of CVR data was conducted.
