  • Remote Ground Station (RGS) squitters

Rather surprised to receive this in Southern England. It's from the ARINC ground station at Asturias (Spain), ICAO code LEAS, IATA code OVD, about 470 miles from where I am

    ACARS mode: 2 Aircraft reg:
Message label: SQ Block id: [Uplink]
    Message content:-
    01XA OVD LEAS2 ARINC
    -------------------------------------[21/02/2013 04:15]

I've added some spaces to the message content line to make it easier to read. Normally it would would have no gaps. Note that all ARINC remote ground stations share the same identifier and will always appear as ACARS mode: 2. The fourth character of the message line shows A for ARINC

What kind of antenna are you using, if you don't mind me asking?

It's a home-made half-wave dipole, cut for 130Mhz. Each leg of the dipole is 21.5"
Cost? Negligible. It was made of of two old wire coat-hangers which I straightened out and then cut to length.

                        Hi,

Which frequency(or is it various ones) - do you generally receive the "Uplink" squitters on ?

Peter, the uplink and downlink are on the same frequency, just like with voice comms, because the ACARS system was originally designed to actually use the voice radio.

Yes I understand that - what I mean is which of the usual ACARS frequencies - I have been monitoring 131.725 for past couple of hours and only one Uplink SQ so far is below. Not sure where it is? I'm located near to Hastings. Appreciate the help.

Sorry, I've managed to quite comprehensively misunderstand you. I'm near Zurich and get the most traffic on 131.725 and 131.525. Sometimes 131.825 pipes up as well. Uplink traffic is tough to get though if you are not near a transmitter as it sends most of its power upwards. I'm about 10 miles from the transmitter but its signal is far weaker than the aircraft.

                              You could also try: 131.550, 131.850, 136.750 and 136.925.

Switch off AGC and try to find a good setting for gain and bandwidth with your ears and an audio card before using dump1090 or other tools. It should be nice and quiet static with clearly audible squits during data transfer.
