  • Vienna -> Kiev, why flying this strange route?

    Hi,

This is what I currently see on flightradar24.com:

I do not know much about aviation. Would someone more knowledgeable explain to me why this plane is flying over such a long route to reach its destination?

    Thanks.

    My guess is avoiding thunderstorms.

Is it normal to fly 350 km off route to avoid a thunderstorm? Also, since I live in the area where the plane was at the above screenshot time, I know for sure he/she chose a route directly through the storm .

        Airplanes avoid CB clouds.
If there is storm in your city it doesn't mean that there are dangerous CB clouds at 30-35-40.000 feet above your city.
