I bought mine from Wimo. Others will suggest alternatives, but my setup is fully illustrated and explained here:

      Hi, Eirik
there is no quick answer to your question. It is depending on your personal receiving situation. An outdoor antenna (and preamp) may extend the range but not dramaticly. Under special circumstances the result might be worse.

Wimo antenna is good, but 2 out of 10 has broke, so now a days i'm using http://www.ssejim.co.uk/26-sseads1090sj.htm and works even better.

          Thanx for the answers.

If someone could point me in the right direction about what antenna we need, to listen
to local atc on the sbs-1eR, it would be nice. Have looked thru some pages without finding out this.

            Hi, Arnt.
any airband antenna will do this job, from a car antenna through groundplane to beam. Even a simple cable put out of the window.

                (I call it).,OM11090

A few month ago in the forum, we had a antenne shown to us..

Which looked like a couple of coils soldered to three different lenght of copper wire,
Which in turn was connected to a socket.,The plug with cable was then strapped to a
                Mast.

I checked this out., and decide to construct it…, with a few alterations, so that it would
Be more weatherproof that it appeared.(it reminded me of my Soldering practice that we
Use to have 40 years ago).,And more solid buildt(after reading Mike comments on 2/10
                Breakages)

The modifications that I did was firstly, build a ground plane(that could be used for all-
Magnet antennes),with the aid of a Peanut tin and two pieces of copper wire, each being
½ lomba long (19.6 cm), which went thro the sides of the Peanut tin with equal lenths on both sides, which were the soldered to the tin.

Instead of using the PL259 (big loss)., I used a 4 hole Telfon flanged Cu/Be-pin socket.,
And at the same time ordered a 6m H-155 cable with SMA/N plugs attached(the most
Expensive part of the antenne) from Wimo. (Socket/plugs and cable costing €28.84).

When I think of the cost involved, I reckon Ive paid around €40-?45 for all the bits and pieces.

With my Window-sill Test 240° direction.(mainly SW direction) I find that my reception
Is pretty good getting as far as Luxenburg airport and in the west direction as far as the North
Sea just beyond Rotterdam(129nM)…, with occasional spikes of 3-400nM…, Please note.,
I have not got a Pre-amp connected, its simple the made home made antenne and 6m cable.
So…, Im looking forward to seeing what the result will be when I have the OM1190 up on
the roof.(which is about 7m higher).

Oh yea., the OM 1190 antenne looks something like this.by window-test..:

                    Hi Karl,

That was a very conservative estimation, but anyway no more than €40.
                    (Recycled parts, plastic milk top,plastic elec-cable channel,2 com.glue extra.)

No.! not yet., as I was consontrating on the OM1190 before Altesheimer set in

BUT.! when youve finished yours, I would be interested in how a Pre-amp works with it...!

                    Regards David

                      Hi, David,
concerning the preamp there is no reason why it should not work. It doesnt matter which kind of antenna it is, helix, horn, beam or DC-coupled. The only thing which might happen is, that you get a "black hole" around your position of some nm's because of the vertical angle and the amplyfied signals.

For the tests the problem is that I need to shutdown my receiver for 1 or 2 days to get a fair result (and that I dont like (the shutdown)). I don't have a spare receiver.
                      cu Karl

If somebody is looking for simply replacing his ADS-B rubber antenna against something waterproofed should take this into consideration:

cheap and waterproof, (BNC should be replaced)
