  • Re VNA: I use miniVNA Tiny but the DG8SAQ is supposed to work very well.

    Re antenna:
    before finsishing experiments, I wanted to optimize the design of the thick/thin antenna.
    I used MMANA and get the following results:

    If you have a few minutes, could you tell me the what the result is with 4NEC2?

    As you can see on the wire definition, this starts with a ground plane using 4 x 69mm long 2mm diameter wires at an angle of 20 deg below horizon.
    Then a vertical section of 65mm long 8mm diameter
    Then a sequence of 3 times : 138 mm long .2mm diameter followed by 130 mm long 8 mm diameter

      The 4NEC2 simulation I posted earlier had dimensions (from top to bottom):
      138mm long/10mm dia + 138mm long/0.1 mm dia + 69mm long/10mm dia + 4 radials 69 mm long/2mm dia/45 degrees from horizontal.

      Your latest dimensions with which you have done MMANA simulation are different from what I have used in 4NEC2 simulation.
      I will have to do a new geometry and simulation in 4NEC2 using your latest dimensions.
      I will do this shortly and post the results.

      The results of previous simulation are again given below, but with addition of wire geometry screenshots.

        Seems 4NEC2 goes crazy with thick-thin design.
        MMANA results seem to be closer to your measured results.

          Need to test. 2 stacked half wave like on the picture should be OK but feed impedance might be very low when stacking more half wave phase/radiating sections above.
          If there are antenna specialists on the forum, would like to hear what they think.
          The top sections could be assembled on a fiber glass rod (8mm rods used for kites) which would allow to make the assembly precise and easy.
          The phasing line is just very small diameter copper wire.

          Will try to get something done for next weekend.

          i've got the materials and i think ihave worked out a way to keep things apart, but you have a gap between the 1/4 radials and the first 1/4 10mm section how big should that be? and what thickness is the link between those bits?

          Well i have made one but i thought i had a connector for the cable but i dont so going to have to order one. Means i cant reliably test it yet.

          • Cant see that design getting anywhere NEAR working... sorry :-(

            There will be phase differences requiring at least one coil between the top sections... and no idea what the short link is all about

                    • Hi Guys, I'm using a 7dB Antenna with a magnetic base.It's sitting on an metallic plate mounted on a plastic pole.Do I need to use a metallic mounting pole to ground the base properly or will it lead to more noise?

                        As this is designed for a car, the plate the magnet sticks to become the artificial Earth... you should really have a larger plate under it for this reason - it should reduce noise (as it will shield more of the world under it) the bigger the better really... but a biscuit tin lid would be a good starting point. (or similar size... maybe an old iron pan etc)

                          • Hello guys I'm looking for some comments

                            I've been running the dvb-t dongle with its standard antenna for a while now and got so-so performance. If I take FR24 reporting distance as a benchmark this would be 49 NM.
                            Yesterday I decided to build a collinear antenna. I got a hold of some RG6 coax cable. Finding the correct building info was quite difficult I ended up with 10 elements of 116 mm.
                            I haven't checked the math since I have no knowledge on this subject. After installing the cable I didn't receive the performance boost I hoped for.
                            In the same benchmark FR24 now reports 55 NM after a half a day. But I do receive more aircraft. I know I haven't given the design much time but I have the "luxury" of living in a busy airspace.

                            My situation is troubled by trees standing round my house, but the antenna is mounted outside in a pvc pipe. The USB dongle is mounted on the roof directly under the antenna.
                            I was hoping you guys have any usefull tips for my improving my range!

                            • How high is your antenna above ground? That is a critical factor, no matter how good or bad your antenna is. So try and give it more height, you will be surprised with better reception if you get it about 10m above ground. Or even on top of your roof even...

                              • I'd guess the antenna starts at about 1 meter from the flat roof, my house itself is about 3 meters high. You can check the photograph to get an idea.
                                I don't really want to put it any higher as its already standing out like a Christmas tree. I just expected better performance than the stock antenna...
