Cathay Pacific has launched disciplinary proceedings after a captain was photographed asleep at the controls of a passenger flight from Dubai to Hong Kong, the South China Morning Post reported Sunday.

Cathay Pacific bosses launched action against an employee who took a photo of the captain as he had “power nap” in cockpit at 11,000 meters on Dubai-Hong Kong flight, the newspaper said.
The photo was taken in August, it said.

The airline employee, who took the picture, leaked it to a journalist for use in a newspaper, the report said.

    Photo included.............................

However, it is the colleague who took the picture and not the sleeping pilot who is under investigation
over the shot taken on board a flight from Dubai to Hong Kong in August.
The airline confirmed the sleeping pilot was doing nothing wrong as 'controlled rest' is permitted
during cruise times on flights in exceptional circumstances to combat fatigue at critical times

This happens all the time. With long hours and constant time changes, most airlines allow controlled sleep periods when in the cruise.

There is always a routine - only one at a time, and advise the Senior Flight Attendant who will come in regularly to check the other pilot has not fallen asleep.

With the whole flight programmed into the FMGC, any ATC changes in altitude or direction simply a twiddle of a knob away and any collisions taken care of by the very loud lady who lives in the TCAS, there really isn't a problem.

In fact, even when they are both there, most pilots would spend the majority of the cruise doing crosswords or Soduku, while keeping an ear on the radio. You'd struggle to get into many cockpits at the end of a flight for the accumulated piles of newspapers.
