    Dreamliner’s Nightmare

Before the alarming emergency in Boston involving Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner catching fire lies one far scarier moment—the closest call any jet can have. In November 2010, after a six-hour test flight, a 787 was on approach to the airport at Laredo, Texas. Suddenly an electrical fire broke out in the rear of the plane. The pilot found himself without his primary controls to fly down to a landing. The 787 and the 30 or so technicians and crew aboard were saved only by a last-resort device, a small turbine that drops below the fuselage to snatch power from the slipstream, working like a windmill. Even then, all aboard were evacuated on the runway by emergency slides—extremely rare for a test flight.
    Qatar Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner
Boeing played down the seriousness of this episode as a problem that would be fixed. But it pinpointed a vulnerability unique to the 787. In other jets, the power for flight controls and other systems comes from the engines. In the 787, critical parts of the system depend on electrical power generated by equipment in two bays beneath the cabin. One of these bays was the origin of the fire in a Japan Airlines 787 while parked at a gate in Boston this week and of problems experienced by other 787 operators, including United Airlines and Qatar Airways.

      Qatar's "Dreamliner" landing in Zurich

A Boeing B787 is landing at Zurich airport for the first time ever today (14 January). Qatar Airways now deploys this aircraft on the Zurich-Doha route. Switzerland’s largest airport is one of the first four destinations that the carrier flies to with the Dreamliner, which is mainly made of composite materials. It is expected that Qatar Airways will operate all its flights from Zurich to Doha with this new plane from 1 February. Until that date around half of the connections will be operated by Airbus A330s.

What time does my flight depart? How do I get to the gate? Are you picking someone up from the airport? What rules do I have to follow? You'll find answers to all of these questions here, as well as an overview of other useful information and news about airport operations. You'll also find an overview of all the shops and restaurants and various event and day trip options at the airport.

        Dreamliner deployed on European routes

        Dreamliner deployed on European routes
National carrier Qatar Airways has embarked on its Boeing 787 European expansion with the deployment of the next-generation Dreamliner aircraft on three more routes – Munich, Zurich and Frankfurt.
The Doha-based carrier has started flying the Dreamliner on the Munich route four-times-a-week.
The first-ever commercial flight of a Boeing 787 to Switzerland was launched yesterday with Qatar Airways introducing the Dreamliner on the Zurich route three-times-a-week.
Beginning February 1, one of the double daily services to Frankfurt will be served by a Boeing 787.
February 1 also signals an increase of 787 frequency on the Munich and Zurich routes to daily.
All three destinations are currently operated with a mixed Airbus fleet.
The addition of the German-speaking cities to the already established 787 on one of the five daily London Heathrow flights takes to four the number of European routes featuring the aircraft.
Also starting February 1, Qatar Airways will deploy the 787 on all daily flights from Doha to Perth. Qatar Airways will be the first airline to operate Dreamliner flights to and from Australia.
Qatar Airways currently operates four 787s, with a further 56 pending delivery.
The airline took delivery of its first Boeing 787 in November.
Qatar Airways chief Akbar al-Baker said: “As an airline we are always striving to enhance passenger experience in the skies by offering improved connectivity with convenient scheduling and an all-round new inflight product, which makes a significant impact on travel decisions.
“In addition to introducing new routes, we are also relentlessly focused on improving the passenger experience when travelling with Qatar Airways.
“This is why there is so much hype around our Boeing 787 – it offers the travelling public a second-to-none flying experience straight through from comfort, to entertainment to gastronomy.”
Qatar Airways’ Dreamliner aircraft features 254 custom-made seats across its business and economy class cabins, with specially designed interiors, together with a unique inflight entertainment system offering more than 1,000 audio and video fully interactive programming options.
The business cabin features 22 seats in a 1–2–1 layout while economy has 232 seats in a 3–3–3 configuration.

NTSB releases photos of burned Dreamliner battery

The National Transportation Safety Board released its second update on Monday regarding its investigation into the Jan. 7 fire aboard a Japan Airlines Boeing 787 at Boston's Logan International Airport.

Included in the agency's release are photos of the lithium-ion battery that powered the auxiliary power unit on the airplane.

The battery was removed and transported back to the NTSB Materials Laboratory in Washington on Jan. 10. The battery is currently being examined by NTSB investigators, who will disassemble it this week, the agency says in its release.

Check out the full NTSB release for more details on its findings so far.

(Moneywatch) The state-of-the-art technology in Boeing's 787 Dreamliner is creating state-of-the-art problems, potentially further stalling delivery of the already late arriving commercial airplane.

In the past week there have been a number of problems with the new 787s. Analysts agree that fuel leaks on planes in Boston and Tokyo were likely no more than the standard "growing pains" common to plane launches. But they were more troubled by a battery fire, which hit another plane in Boston, because it suggests problems with how the aircraft is built and raises questions about whether it will be as efficient as promised.

"Until the battery fire happened, everything was pretty standard teething troubles," says Guy Norris, a senior editor for Aviation Week. "The issue with the battery is more significant because it goes into new realms."

And now ANA, the first to fly have grounded their fleet after another incident involving battery

All Nippon Airways - the world's first carrier to receive the Dreamliner from Boeing after years of delays - said a battery problem triggered a cockpit error message that forced the pilots to land the plane in southwestern Japan. It grounded its 17 aircraft pending safety checks.

Japan Airlines swiftly followed suit, saying it would suspend all Boeing Co 787 flights scheduled to leave Japan on Wednesday due to safety concerns.

                Japan News Network (JNN), VIDEO,

Japan News Network (JNN), a network of local broadcasters, put out dramatic footage on Wednesday (January 16) of passengers being evacuated from the ANA 787 Dreamliner which was forced to make an emergency landing at an airport in western Japan, following a malfunction in the plane's batteries. Japan's two leading airlines grounded their fleets of Boeing 787s on Wednesday following the incident which triggered renewed, global safety concerns over a plane many see as the future of commercial aviation. ANA flight 692 left Yamaguchi Airport in western Japan shortly after 8 a.m. local time (2300 GMT Tuesday) bound for Haneda Airport near Tokyo, a 65-minute flight. About 18 minutes into the flight, at 30,000 feet, the plane began a descent. It descended to 20,000 feet in about four minutes and made an emergency landing 16 minutes later, according to flight-tracking website Flightaware.com. A spokesman for Osaka airport authority said the plane landed in Takamatsu at 8:45 a.m. All 129 passengers and eight crew were evacuated safely via the plane's inflatable chutes. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said 5 people were slightly injured when they jumped out using the emergency chutes. All Nippon Airways Co said it was grounding all 17 of its 787s and Japan Airlines Co said it suspended all 787 flights scheduled for Wednesday. ANA said its planes could be back in the air as soon as Thursday (January 17) once checks were completed. The two carriers operate around half of the 50 Dreamliners delivered by Boeing to date. Wednesday's incident follows a series of mishaps for the new Dreamliner. The sophisticated plane, the world's first mainly carbon-composite airliner, has suffered fuel leaks, a battery fire, wiring problem, brake computer glitch and cracked cockpit window in recent days.

LOT Dreamliner prepares first flight to Chicago as Japan grounds fleet

As Japan grounds its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet after safety fears, Poland's LOT airlines is scheduled to make its first transatlantic crossing in its Dreamliner on Wednesday.
All Nippon Airways (ANA) grounded its 17 Dreamliners when a flight from Yamaguchi Ube airport to Tokyo was forced to land shortly after take-off when smoke was seen in the cockpit.
"There was a battery alert in the cockpit and there was an odd smell detected in the cockpit and cabin,” said ANA vice president Osamu Shinobe.
Passengers had to be evacuated from the plane on emergency chutes when it returned to the airport, Rueters reports.
Japan Airlines then immediately grounded its seven 787s until further notice.
US civil aviation authorities are already investigating the safety of the new 787 Dreamliners and India's aviation authorities are reviewing safety standards of the aircraft.
Meanwhile, Poland's LOT national airlines is preparing to go ahead, as scheduled, with the first flight by its Dreamliner – which it took delivery of last November – to Chicago on Wednesday.
The 787 will take passengers, including several government officials, to O'Hare airport in Chicago on the plane's inaugural transatlantic flight.
LOT is the first airline in Europe to use the new Dreamliners.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a LOT spokesman said on Tuesday night that the flight will go ahead as scheduled.
Earlier this week a LOT spokesman said its Dreamliners are safe. (pg)

Polish LOT airlines' Dreamliner grounded in Chicago

LOT airlines' Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been grounded at an airport in Chicago,
after the US aviation regulator grounded all such planes amid safety concerns

Polish LOT airlines' Dreamliner left Warsaw's Chopin airport last night on its inaugural commercial transatlantic flight to O'Hare international airport in Chicago.
The plane will now stay in Chicago after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered that the 787s must undergo safety checks after a battery fault caused an emergency landing in Japan.
The FAA said airlines would have to demonstrate that the lithium ion batteries involved in the Japan incident were safe before they could resume flying Boeing's newest commercial airliner, but gave no details on when that could occur, Reuters reports.
Indian and Chilean airlines airlines grounded their Dreamliners in response and now around four-fifths of the new aircraft in service throughout the world are now grounded over safety fears.
LOT spokesman Mark Kłuciński said that “we respect this decision” of the US aviation authority to ground the planes, adding, however, that the flight to Chicago from Warsaw “ran smoothly”, the PAP news agency reports.
It is currently unknown when the 787 can make the flight back to Warsaw and all passengers booked on the return flight Thursday morning (Polish time) have been booked on alternative flights.
Boeing's shares fell 2 percent in after-hours trading to 72.75 USD after the FAA announcement that Dreamliners had been grounded till further notice.
Poland received its first Dreamliner, which cost over 200 million USD a piece, in November last year, the first of ten 787s the loss-making LOT national airline purchased from Boeing.
The use new battery technology - which caused the emergency landing of an All Nippon internal Japanese flight this week after smoke appeared in the cockpit - is among the cost-saving features of the 787, which Boeing says burns 20 percent less fuel than rival jetliners using older technology.
Lithium-ion batteries can catch fire if they are overcharged and, once alight, they are difficult to put out as the chemicals produce oxygen, Boeing's chief engineer for the 787, Mike Sinnett, told Reuters last week.
LOT airlines has reported that no incidents involving faulty batteries have been reported on its Dreamliner flights.
Canon-fire and applause greeted the plane as it landed on the tarmac for the first time in Warsaw in November 2012.
LOT is the first airline in Europe to have the Dreamliners, which can take up to 290 passengers.
Its first commercial flight was from Warsaw to Prague in the Czech Republic on 14 December.

UPDATED - LOT airlines\' Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been grounded at an airport in Chicago, after the US aviation regulator grounded all such planes amid safety concerns.

Dreamliner battery probe may take weeks: Japan battery maker

Tokyo:The Japanese company that made the battery installed in an All Nippon Airways (ANA) Dreamliner which made an emergency landing said Thursday its probe could take weeks. "It is impossible to predict at this point how long it will take, in days or weeks, because we must study the system and GS Yuasa is not the only player involved," a company spokeswoman said.

The Japanese firm is taking part in a wider probe launched after aviation watchdogs in at least four countries grounded the next-generation aircraft, which has been hammered by a string of safety problems. Regulators in Japan, India and Chile followed the lead of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in ordering an indefinite halt to all operations, after the ANA plane was forced into an emergency landing Wednesday. Electrolyte leaks and burn marks were found on the lithium-ion battery's metal casing, ANA said. Kyodo News reported that officials from the Japan Transport Safety Board were working on the principle it overheated.

The powerful batteries used on the Dreamliner have emerged as the focus of concern in light of the ANA incident and another on a JAL flight in the United States last week, with smoke reported on both planes.Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in consumer electronics such as laptops and mobile phones. Airlines warn passengers against carrying too many in their baggage because of the risk of overheating. GS Yuasa shares tumbled 4.98 percent to 305 yen in Tokyo trade.

FAA airworthiness directive requires 787 battery system modification

US FAA has ordered a “modification of the battery system” of the Boeing 787, which the agency grounded Wednesday by an emergency directive.

In a new airworthiness directive (AD), FAA said it has “evaluated all the relevant information and determined the unsafe condition [apparent on the Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways 787s] is likely to exist or develop in other products of the same type design.” It cited the “potential for fire in the [787] electrical compartment.”

FAA said the AD “requires modification of the [787] battery system, or other actions, in accordance with a method approved” by the manager of the agency’s Seattle Aircraft Certification Office. It provided no details on what modifications would qualify to enable the lifting of the grounding, which has now been applied to all 50 787s that had been in service worldwide. And it warned further action may also be required.

“We consider this AD interim action,” FAA stated, “As the investigation progresses, we might determine that additional action is necessary.”

FAA said the AD was prompted by the JAL and ANA 787 incidents “involving lithium ion battery failures that resulted in release of flammable electrolytes, heat damage, and smoke … The cause of these failures is currently under investigation. We are issuing this AD to prevent damage to critical systems and structures, and the potential for fire in the electrical compartment.”
