Air Canada: Why adding the Boeing 787 Dreamliner could be a travel gamechanger

Air Canada is pinning its future business strategy on Boeing’s new 787 jet that will enable the airline to expand
to new destinations especially in emerging markets like China and India.
The long-anticipated 787 plane, also known as the Dreamliner, made a stop in Toronto on Friday as part of Air Canada’s 75th anniversary
celebrations. The fuel-efficient plane, made of composite plastic, has the potential to transform airline travel,
    and possibly the aviation industry.
But it has had a bumpy start, with deliveries delayed by more than three years as Boeing dealt with repeated glitches.

To date, only five planes have been delivered to customers with 865 on order, and the airline currently is finishing
two and half planes a month, with a production goal of getting to 10 a month by end of 2013.

The Dreamliner, plus 5 other new direct flights from Boston (slide show)

On Sunday, Japan Airlines holds a launch party for its new non-stop service between Boston and Tokyo on the much-heralded
Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a fuel-efficient aircraft that brings big-jet ranges to mid-size airplanes and uses
20 percent less fuel than today’s similarly sized airplanes. (The first plane will actually
take off from Logan for Tokyo's Narita Airport in April, making Boston the first U.S. city to get Dreamliner service.)
It will also travel at a similar speed as today’s fastest wide body planes, according to Boeing.

Qatar Airways to take delivery of 787s this summer

Qatar Airways is set to take delivery of five 787s during 2012, with the first set to arrive in the Gulf country this summer, Gulf Times has reported. Initially, the Doha-based carrier will deploy the aircraft on intra-Gulf routes to provide flight crew with training hours before it goes on static display at the Farnborough Air Show in July and then enter into long-haul commercial service on the Doha-London Heathrow route, the airline said.

Air India to induct its first 'Dreamliner' Boeing next week

Scotching speculation about further delay in its delivery, US aircraft builder Boeing on Friday said the first of the 27 'Dreamliner' planes ordered by Air India would land in Hyderabad next week during the airshow there.

However, the aircraft is likely to be inducted only in May after it gets operational and technical certifications from the US Federal Aviation Administration, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and other agencies.

Official sources said the national carrier would induct this plane, painted in Air India livery, but only by May after the mandatory certification process was completed.

We are not writing a cheque for $500 million to Air India: Boeing

NEW YORK: With Air India seeking a compensation package for the substantial delays in delivery of Boeing's Dreamliner aircraft, the US manufacturer today said it will "not write a cheque" for $ 500 million to the airline.

President and Chief Executive Officer of Boeing's commercial airplane unit Jim Albaugh said he had read reports coming from India. "I think if we settle for 500 million dollars somebody would have told me. We do not comment on deals that we have done, but I can tell you that we are not writing anybody a cheque for 500 million dollars," he said when asked about the reports of it paying compensation to Air India.
