Innovation in the Air Can Begin on the Water

MOST aeronautical and technological innovations in airplanes initially involve a guy like Dave Cummings
in the cockpit, testing out new equipment under various conditions.

    Chris Gash

Well, maybe not exactly like Mr. Cummings, a former bush pilot in Alaska who told me he had been through a couple of dozen cockpit fires and other adventures in severe conditions.
These days, Mr. Cummings has a less buccaneering job as a pilot of a big-bellied flying boat — a restored 1951 twin-engine Grumman Albatross amphibious plane that serves as an aerial laboratory for Row 44, the California company that provides in-flight broadband service through satellite technology. Right now, Row 44 is best known for its introduction of broadband Wi-Fi connectivity on Southwest Airlines’ fleet of about 540 Boeing 737s.

    Cold War secret revealed

For more than a decade they toiled in the strange, boxy-looking building on the hill above the municipal airport, the building with no windows (except in the cafeteria), the building filled with secrets.

They wore protective white jumpsuits, and had to walk through air-shower chambers before entering the sanitized "cleanroom" where the equipment was stored.

    They spoke in code. ...................

Bog: Kjos tæt på at forlade Norwegian

    07-08-2012
Norwegians topchef og hovedejer, Bjørn Kjos, var i foråret så træt af striden med selskabets piloter, at han overvejede at forlade Norwegian og sælge sin ejerandel til et konkurrerende lavprisselskab. Det fremgår af ny bog.

Post A Xian MA60 aircraft book

I once had a great ride on an Air Zimbabwe Xian MA60 from Johannesburg, South African to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. So much so that I decided to write a book about it:

    Time the Turboprop

This book was written to bring to light the positive aspects of flying in a unique aeroplane called Tim. Tim is African-owned and a member of an impressive fleet of Air Zimbabwe aircraft. He is very nice and comfortable inside. He has a neat cockpit and is piloted by a crew of two. He is happy to give a excellent service that is generally bump free. He responds dilligently to all commands instructed to him by the pilots. He needs to be balanced during flight and ideally equal seating arrangements on either side of the isle are important. This book describes Tim’s journey from Bulawayo’s Joshua Nkomo Airport to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport. It is written for children and hopefully provides and interesting read to those who like flying. It also opens up details about the Xian MA60 which may be of interest to the young plane spotter. It is also hoped that this book will lessen people’s fear of flying.
