After 9/11: airports 'wasting billions' on needless security checks for passengers

Airports are wasting billions of pounds on unnecessary security checks for travellers who pose no threat to planes, according to the airline industry's global body, amid growing support for an airport screening regime that gives preferential treatment to low-risk passengers.

Officials chase unconfirmed al-Qaida bomb threat

Officials chase unconfirmed al-Qaida bomb threat

WASHINGTON (AP) — Just days before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, U.S. counterterrorism officials were chasing a credible but unconfirmed al-Qaida threat to use a car bomb on bridges or tunnels in New York City or Washington. It was the first "active plot" timed to coincide with the somber commemoration of the terror group's 9/11 attacks a decade ago that killed nearly 3,000 people.
Counterterrorism officials were investigating the threat throughout the night and into Friday, as police in New York and Washington said they would increase their already stepped-up staffing levels in light of the recent intelligence.
Law enforcement officials were pursuing three people who may be traveling to the U.S. or who have recently entered the country, based on the detailed information received by the U.S. intelligence community late Wednesday, officials said. The intelligence suggested that al-Qaida planned to car bomb one of the two cities that were hit 10 years ago.

9/11 air controllers were in chaos

The sheer bafflement of America's air traffic control network during the two hours when America was under attack on September 9, 2001 has been put on vivid display with the release of complete audio tape recordings of increasingly frantic communications as the crisis accelerated.
The tapes, which also carry the voices of commercial pilots, military aviation officials and fighter pilots, were originally meant as part of a comprehensive audio history of that day for consideration by the 9/11 Commission, but the panel disbanded before it was completed and the tapes have never been available in their entirety before.

Airplane bathroom sex blamed for terror alert

With security officials on edge for the tenth anniversary of 2001's World Trade Center attack, even something as trivial as passengers spending too much time in an airplane bathroom proved sufficient to cause fighter jets to be scrambled and bomb squads called in.
ABC News reported on Sunday that there had been two separate incidents, one involving an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to New York's JFK Airport and the other involving a Frontier Airlines flight from Denver to Detroit.
The first situation was resolved even before the plane landed, when the passengers in question complied with directions from federal air marshalls. The second was a little trickier, and that plane was taken to a remote area of the airport to be searched for explosives.

    9/11 lawsuit blames United Airlines

A lawsuit filed in a federal court here has pointed figures at United Airlines for security failures during the 9/11 attacks, saying the five terrorists who boarded the flight from Boston were cleared by a staff who could not speak or understand English and did not even know who Osama bin Laden was.

The documents, revealing details not previously made public, were filed in federal district court in Manhattan by lawyers on behalf of the family of Mark Bavis, who was on United Flight 175 that crashed into the World Trade Centre.
The lawsuit is the only remaining wrongful-death lawsuit out of the 100 filed after the attacks.
The case against United and security firm Huntleigh USA will go on trial in November.

The Facts Concerning Flight AA77 and the Pentagon

On SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, American Airlines Flight AA77 departed Washington Dulles Airport at 8.20 local time bound for Los Angeles. The aircraft climbed to its cruise altitude under the control of Dulles radar. Suddenly all radio contact was lost with the aircraft as it began its abnormal manoeuvring and decent towards the Pentagon hitting it at 534 mph, resulting in 64 fatalities on board.
The National Transport Safety Board issued Document DCA01MA064 dated February 19, 2002 entitled Flight Path Study, American Airlines Flight AA77.
This document was put together using, and quoting from, the following: The recording from the radar tapes whilst AA77 was being tracked over Washington; the total transcript of radio exchanges between Dulles and AA77 until the pilots stopped transmitting; the Digital Flight Data Recorder (the ‘Black Box’) showing the descent of the aircraft from its cruise altitude to the base of the Pentagon, Finally it stated they were forbidden to release further reports as to the reason for the accident due to the ongoing ‘investigation’ by the FBI.

Before September 11th: Air France Flight 8969

The tension in the air was as thick on the tarmac of the Marseilles Provence Airport. It was Christmas 1994, and most aboard Air France Flight 8969 were anticipating spending time with families and friends after landing in Paris.
Instead, they got something much different. After four Algerian Islamic militants hijacked their plane, killed three fellow passengers and rigged the aircraft with explosives, the 229 survivors needed all the help they could get.
