Ferocious Hurricane Irene batters New York
Reuters) - Hurricane Irene battered New York with ferocious winds and driving rain early on Sunday, shutting down the U.S. financial capital and most populous city, halting mass transit and causing massive power blackouts as it churned slowly northward along the East Coast.
New York City's normally bustling streets were eerily quiet after authorities ordered tens of thousands of residents to evacuate low-lying areas and shut down its subways, airports and buses.
Commuters were left to try to flag down yellow taxis and livery cabs that patrolled largely deserted streets.
9 Killed by Irene
At least nine people have been killed in incidents directly connected to Hurricane Irene, officials said. As of early Sunday morning Israel time, several million people on the east coast were without power, and some 10,000 plane flights have been canceled.
Forecasters have issued a tornado watch for the New York City area, as Irene approaches. Forecasters added that Irene might begin to weaken on Sunday night, after it hits the New York area.

Dulles still operating as Irene approaches
By: The Associated Press | The Associated Press | 08/27/11 8:40 PM
Two of the three major airports in the Baltimore-Washington area are virtually shut down as Hurricane Irene approaches.
A spokeswoman says airlines continued to fly in and out of Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Va., Saturday evening despite rain and gusty winds.
But she says Reagan National Airport in Washington is quiet due to many afternoon and evening flight cancellations. More cancellations are expected Sunday morning.
A Maryland Aviation Administration spokesman says most afternoon and evening flights at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport have been canceled. He says most airlines hope to resume flights Sunday afternoon if conditions allow.

Here are reports from the states most affected by Irene, which weakened to a tropical storm at 9 a.m.:

Flights resuming at Washington-area airports
WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal officials say flights are resuming with minimal delays at Washington-area airports, which took a glancing blow from Hurricane Irene.
New York-area airports remain closed as Irene passed over the nation's busiest air-traffic region.
The longer that Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark, New Jersey, airports remain shuttered, the worse it will be as travel delays ripple across the country. Federal officials said Sunday they didn't know when the airports would reopen.
Airlines have already canceled thousands of flights for Sunday, but it was unclear how much havoc the storm would cause for travelers on Monday.
Weather officials downgraded Irene from a hurricane to a tropical storm Sunday as the storm's winds lost speed.

Britons stranded after Irene pounds US
Tuesday 30 August 2011
Airlines tell Channel 4 News they are putting on extra flights to clear the backlog after thousands of British passengers were left stranded in the US in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
Around 9,000 flights, both domestic and international, were cancelled across the east coast as several states were pounded by Hurricane Irene.
More than 40 people have been killed, many by falling trees and debris
.
Dozens of flights bound for Britain were cancelled when major airports, including New York's JFK and Newark, were forced to close.
The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) estimates between 5,000 and 10,000 Britons are stranded in New York alone.
The Foreign Office is advising passengers to contact their tour operator or airline before travelling.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration all airports on the east coast of the US are now open with the exception of Teterboro which is due to open on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for British Airways told Channel 4 News the company is using bigger planes where possible and putting on two extra flights from the US to the UK to clear the backlog.
The spokesperson said there are no problems for people travelling across the Atlantic in the opposite direction.
He urged any passengers whose flights were cancelled over the weekend to call BA to arrange alternative travel.
Photo gallery: Irene batters US east coast Virgin Atlantic told Channel 4 News it is operating a full flying schedule to and from the east coast of the United States.
A spokesperson said: "Additional seats will also be made available to ensure that the backlog of passengers away from home is cleared as soon as possible."
On 29 August Virgin put on an extra flight from Heathrow to New York's JFK. It is sending another flight to New York on Tuesday to fill with returning passengers on Wednesday.
It estimates that around 180 people are stuck in New York without a confirmed rebooking.
Passengers who have incurred extra costs caused by a cancelled flight from the US should contact their airlines.
The British Airways website says in the event of cancellation or delays "the operating carrier will provide hotel accommodation if necessary and provide transport between the airport and place of accommodation.
"Passengers will be advised of the arrangements for obtaining refreshments, transport and hotel accommodation, by the carrier."
A statement on the Virgin Atlantic website said: "Passengers who are away from home can reclaim reasonable hotel and meal costs while they wait for their new flight to depart."
