Lao Central Plans International Growth with Sukhoi Superjets

Southeast Asian carrier Lao Central Airlines will become the second operator of the Sukhoi Superjet SSJ100 in the region when it takes delivery of the initial of up to nine aircraft it has on order. The first aircraft for the carrier was recently painted in its full corporate livery at the Ulyanvosk, facility of the designer in Russia. It has a firm commitment for three aircraft and options for six more and type certification for the SSJ100 has already been granted by the Laos Civil Aviation Authority.

Although relatively unknown outside of the region, the carrier holds the position of being the first private airline in the Laos People’s Democratic Republic. It was founded in 2010 as Phongsavanh Airlines, part of the wider business interests of Lao company Phongsavanh Group, which is involved in international trading activities as diverse as timber, hospitality, telecommunications, banking and security services.

A later rebranding took place in August 2011 to raise awareness of the airline as a Lao-based venture in international markets. “We decided to change the name to make us more recognisable locally and abroad. The new name will ensure that people know that we are a Lao company, operating out of Laos,” said Thongsay Inthisane, a senior adviser to the venture.

Lao Central Airlines hopes to expand business rapidly in what is a growing aviation market. It is mainly offering flights in domestic skies with links between Luang Prabang, Pakse and Vietiane, which operates alongside an international service between Wattay International Airport in Vietiane and the Thai capital Bangkok. However, it has ambitions to grow and serve destinations across Vietnam, China and Cambodia, before expanding further in the ASEAN region.

Norwegian has revealed Base in Gatwick

Nordic budget carrier Norwegian has revealed a major expansion of its activities in the Spanish and UK markets with new operating bases due to be opened in Alicante and London Gatwick from spring 2013. The airline says it “sees a major passenger potential in London” and will introduce new links to several Mediterranean destinations and the Nordic region from the UK capital. The Alicante base will complement its existing operations at Malaga and Las Palmas.

Norwegian first started serving London in June 2003 when it inaugurated flights from Oslo. It originally served Stansted Airport, but in October 2007 made its debut at Gatwick with the introduction of the airport’s own Oslo link. It has subsequently increased its presence at Gatwick and now serves it from ten separate destinations across the Nordic and Scandinavian regions with almost 150 weekly frequencies. It is now the most popular destination outside its home market, says the airline.
Interestingly, according to Norwegian this network growth will “allow it to better meet the head-on competition from Asian and European carriers in the long-haul market,” ahead of the launch of its own flights to Asia and the USA, although it confirms it has no immediate plans to launch such flights from outside of its home market.

“By establishing a new base in London, Norwegian will be positioned to meet the future competition on short-haul routes within Europe as well as long-haul routes globally. Growth and volumes are necessary to stay competitive in the airline industry,” said Bjørn Kjos, Chief Executive Officer, Norwegian. It will initially base three Boeing 737-800s at London Gatwick but will add a fourth aircraft by the end of 2013.

Norwegian currently has bases of operations in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Spain, while a new base for the company’s long-haul subsidiary is being established in Bangkok. The airline currently operates 64 aircraft on 294 routes to more than 114 destinations and handles just under 16 million passengers in 2011 ranking it as one of Europe’s top low-cost ventures.

                Airport starting flights to Denmark

AIRPORT bosses are welcoming a third attempt to run flights between Newcastle Airport and Copenhagen in Denmark to bring new business and tourism opportunities to the region.

The route operated by Scandinavian Airlines will operate once a day between Monday and Friday and start on February 4.

This is the third time an airline has attempted to run a direct flight between Copenhagen and Newcastle after easyJet withdrew its service in 2004 and Cimber Sterling in 2011.

However regular fliers to Denmark fear ticket prices will still make it more cost effective for families to travel on a budget airline from another regional airport.

Chris Sanders, aviation development director for Newcastle International Airport, said: “We expect the flights to be popular with the Danish community in the North East and for people visiting friends and family in Denmark.

“The link will help support the region’s thriving oil and gas and renewable energy sectors, information technology, general manufacturing and business support services.”

He added: “The route timings allow business travellers to get a full day’s work done in the office before flying which is great news.”

Travellers will also be able to make connections to Stockholm in Sweden, the Norwegian capital Oslo, Warsaw and Poznan in Poland, Palanga in Lithuania and Billund in Denmark.

NECC chief executive, James Ramsbotham, said: “A flight to Copenhagen will help our businesses open up another potentially lucrative market and will be particularly welcomed by our oil and gas engineering firms looking to strengthen links with Scandinavia.

“Copenhagen’s rich cultural offer will no doubt also attract tourists. Likewise the North East’s burgeoning reputation as a tourist destination will bring people to the region providing a boost to our visitor economy.”

From 25th April, Norway premium start-up carrier airline Flynonstop will fly London City to Kristiansand’s Kjevik Airport five times a week.

Kristiansand, Norway’s fifth-largest city is a major business hub for the shipbuilding, oil and gas industries.

It is also a popular holiday destination, known for its white wooden houses, pleasant summer temperatures and entertainment, including Risør’s annual chamber music festival.

A brand new 100-seat Embraer E-190 jet will operate on the route, with each seat having its own iPad.

“We are delighted that Flynonstop has chosen London City Airport as its UK base, opening up Norway and the wider Nordic region as a new destination for our passengers,” says Bernard Lavelle, Sales Director at London City Airport.
