British Airways launches new route from Gothenburg to Manchester

British Airways’ Danish regional franchisee Sun-Air of Scandinavia took over a route left vacant after the demise of the Swedish regional carrier Skyways and its Gothenburg (GOT) based operations previously under the name City Airline. BA’s existing service from Aarhus in Denmark to Sweden’s second-largest city now continues 11 times weekly to Manchester (MAN) in the UK. Flights are operated with 32-seat Do328 aircraft. Sun-Air’s Commercial Director Kristian Tvergaard commented: “As a direct consequence of demand from both British and Swedish business people for a direct connection between Manchester and Sweden’s second largest city Gothenburg, we have decided to take over this route. We believe that the route has a lot of potential as there are several British-owned companies in the Gothenburg area, and the UK is one of the region’s top ten trading partners. Furthermore we have more than 20 years of experience flying to both Manchester and Gothenburg, and therefore we have great knowledge of both markets.” British Airways also serves Gothenburg Landvetter Airport from London Heathrow.

Emirates to add fifth daily flight to Bangkok

Emirates Airline said on Monday that it was planning to add a fifth daily flight to Bangkok at the end of the first quarter of 2013.

The Dubai carrier said it was further strengthening its commitment to South East Asia by adding the extra flight, with the announcement coming just weeks after it launched a daily service between Dubai and Phuket.

From March 31, Emirates will operate 35 flights a week between Dubai and Bangkok, plus a daily Airbus A380 service between Bangkok and Hong Kong, and a daily flight between Bangkok and Sydney, which connects on to Christchurch.

These services, along with the Phuket flights, take the number of weekly Emirates departures from Thailand to 56.

Emirates keen on trans-Pacific link with Qantas

Emirates wants to extend its alliance with Qantas Airways across the Pacific Ocean, allowing passengers to fly around the world on Airbus SAS A380s.

The carriers have scope to link Qantas’s A380 flights into Los Angeles with routes the Gulf carrier seeks to operate from its Dubai hub, Emirates President Tim Clark said in a phone interview. The partnership won provisional approval from Australia’s antitrust regulator last month.

“If the timing is right and the two aircraft meet, with Qantas and Emirates you could go around the world with A380s,” he said yesterday. “I’m sure we could do trans-Pacific business on Qantas metal as part of this overall deal.”

Emirates would push for the alliance’s extension into trans-Pacific routes only if Qantas’s chief executive Alan Joyce and his management back the idea, Mr Clark said.

Qatar Airways to add capacity on Poland route

Qatar Airways on Tuesday announced a capacity increase to daily scheduled services on its Poland route from next month.

Effective from February 1, the current four-times-a-week service from Doha to Warsaw is scheduled to move to a daily operation less than two months after the launch of flights to Poland’s capital city.

The frequency rise follows a pledge by Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker in December to introduce more flights on the Warsaw route once there was strong passenger demand.

“I have been pleasantly surprised how well the route has performed since adding the latest European gateway to our ever-expanding global network last month,” he said.
