Qatar Airways Plans Passenger Flights To Chicago In 2013

Qatar Airways will launch a new daily Doha-Chicago service from April 10, 2013, its fourth US destination, Qatar News Agency (QNA reported).

In an announcement on Wednesday, the carrier said it plans to operate a B777-300ER on the route, having already established twice-weekly cargo flights to Chicago.

The announcement follows the successful launch of services to New York JFK, Washington and Houston.

"Chicago is a key route for business and leisure travellers alike, connecting them from destinations across India, Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific with a one-stop service via Doha to the Midwest," said Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker.

"As Qatar Airways continues its aggressive expansion, we are pleased to finally offer another gateway in the United States, this time to the The Windy City of Chicago, five years after we began operations to North America," he added.

The aircraft operating on the Chicago route will feature 335 seats in a two-class configuration of 42 Business Class seats and 293 in Economy.

There are currently no direct air links between Doha and Chicago, with United Airlines and fellow Star Alliance member Lufthansa offering a service via Frankfurt.
Bahrain's Gulf Air to resume flights to Iraq, Iran

DUBAI: Bahrain's national carrier Gulf Air will resume flights to Iraq and Iran on September 20 after a hiatus of 17 months, the tiny Gulf kingdom's official BNA news agency said on Wednesday.

The flights to Iraq and Iran -- two countries where Shiite leaders criticised Sunni-ruled, Shiite-majority Bahrain's bloody crackdown last year on Shiite-led protests calling for democratic reforms -- were stopped in March 2011.

"Bahrain's national carrier, Gulf Air will resume its services to Iran and Iraq from 20 September 2012 following the Bahrain government's approval," the official BNA news agency said.

"Flights to Baghdad, Arbil, Najaf and Basra in Iraq and Tehran, Mashhad, Shiraz and Isfahan in Iran will begin progressively between 20 September and 28 October 2012 subject to final approvals by the civil aviation authorities of the respective countries," it said.

Finnair Looks To Offload More European Routes

Finland's struggling airline Finnair is still trying to find other airlines to partner with on its less profitable European routes, its chief executive was quoted as saying on Friday.

Part of the oneworld global alliance, Finnair has been cutting costs and jobs and focusing on its more profitable Asian routes after four years of losses and in May handed over the operation of a third of its European routes to low-cost British airline Flybe.

Finnair was previously planning to have another partner by the summer, but high fuel prices and slower spending caused by the economic crisis has hit the industry and many airlines have introduced an investment freeze.

"There are more sellers than buyers. However, I believe that it is totally realistic to find partners," Finnair's chief executive Mika Vehvilainen told economic magazine Talouselama.

"We have to solve the cost problem anyway. The aim is to move to partners either a part of the European traffic or all of the European traffic - that is what we are focusing on," he said, adding that new partners could come from outside Europe..........................

American Airlines calling it quits in Belgium

American Airlines will stop flying to Brussels by the end of the year.

The carrier, currently reorganizing in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, says it will discontinue its New York JFK-Brussels route on Nov. 6. AA says it's ending its Belgian presence "in light of reviewed route performance, market forecasts and trends and the future outlook."

AA dropped its Brussels-Chicago route last September, leaving the JFK route as its only remaining service to Belgium.

Despite posting its intention to drop the JFK-Brussels route, AA was still selling seats on the route (as of 11:30 a.m. ET) that extended past its announced Nov. 6 end date.

In its announcement, AA says it "will continue to serve the Belgian market in conjunction with oneworld partners British Airways and Iberia with flight options through both London Heathrow and Madrid." AA currently flies the New York JFK-Brussels routes with Boeing 757-20 jets.

Assuming the route does end, Business Traveller magazine calls it "a blow to oneworld, as it leaves the alliance without a direct, non-stop service between New York and the capital of the European Union."

    Etihad to launch Tokyo flights

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has announced plans to launch daily flights between its hub Abu Dhabi and Tokyo starting from April 2 next year.

The Abu Dhabi-based airline was the first Middle Eastern carrier to launch operations to the Japanese capital in March 2010, and with five non-stop flights a week to Tokyo’s Narita airport, the airline has since carried approximately 160,000 travellersbetween the two cities.

The daily service will support traffic growth between Abu Dhabi and Japan and connecting traffic to onward GCC destinations, the Middle East, Africa and Europe. The additional services will also improve the connectivity in Abu Dhabi by 40 per cent.

James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ President and Chief Executive Officer, believes the airline’s increase to daily flights will see a further strengthening of the close trade, tourism and cultural ties between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Japan.
