787 Dreamliner nears FAA certification, Boeing says

Boeing said it expects to finish flight tests for the 787 Dreamliner this weekend and to get approval from the Federal Aviation Administration next week, in time to meet its target of delivering the plane in September.
Getting the plane to its first customer, Japan's All Nippon Airways, will be "difficult," just as other milestones have been, Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief Jim Albaugh said Thursday at a conference hosted by Jefferies & Co. in New York.
"The good news is we only have 24 hours left in our flight-test program and we hope to complete the flight-test program probably sometime this weekend," Albaugh said. "We think the FAA will hold their type certification review board next week, and we hope to get our ticket so we can start delivering the 787 yet this month."

First Dreamliner handoff set for next week

The invitations are out and the countdown is on: After numerous delays, Boeing Co. will mark the delivery of its first 787 Dreamliner to Japan's All Nippon Airways exactly one week from today in Everett, Wash.
The "contractual delivery" between the companies will take place a day before.

    JOSHUA TRUJILLO/AP
Boeing Co.’s first 787 delivery to customer ANA is more than three years behind schedule.

The jet made its first public appearance after being rolled out of a hangar last month.
"The airplane is ready. ANA is ready. And Boeing is ready," said Jim Albaugh, CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "This airplane begins a new chapter in aviation history."
ANA's 787 is due to land Sept. 28 in Tokyo, where it is expected to be greeted by airline employees and the media.
The Asian carrier kicked off the 787 program with a record-setting order of 50 of the lightweight composite jets in April 2004.

Boeing marks a milestone in its long history Sunday when the aircraft-maker officially delivers the first Dreamliner, a twin-aisle plane that offers the best fuel economy and range for a craft its size and promises passengers far greater comfort while flying.

"It's a very big deal, not just for Boeing but for the airline community," said Aaron Gellman, professor of transportation at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

    Boeing Co.
The journey to delivering the 787 aircraft, which sells for about $185 million, has been long and problem-plagued for Boeing, which this month marks the 10-year anniversary of moving its world headquarters to Chicago.
