Check if the SMA adapter has a pin
    (it should have one)

Might have bought an RP-SMA adapter. (does not have one)

Got a 2 amp PSU on it now and no difference. The SMA has a pin. I have another one, so I am just about to give that a go.

I dont see anything in this photo which points to poor performance, or may be my eyesight not so good. What I missed?

It's nothing like the photo of the genuine article that you posted and I have since googled and found it to be some sort of fake.

The £4.99 Chinese dongle that I have been using blows this away, whatever it is.

rtl-sdr dot com have their own ebay shop, you should only buy the v3 there or via their website (which also uses ebay i believe).

Sorry to hear you got a fake.

Yes, pretty disappointed. Seller looked good; thousands of reviews, so didn't look like a fly-by-night merchant. Lesson learned and ordered from rtl-sdr dot com now.

Sorry to waste the forum's time.

    Help was much appreciated though.

    Cheers

The more significant improvement is also getting their LNA:

Without the LNA the dongles with integrated LNA are probably better.

    wiedehopf,

you suggested this LNA to me as well. Did you see an improvement yourself while using this one?
