The problem is the start of the command line at the front. (pi@raspberrypi:~ $)

I'll just clear the console, that should do it.
But often the following command line is posted as well.
    Still less offending stuff.

Most of the time they don't need to post the output of that script anyway as it usually works

      wiedehopf:
I have since tried the manual installation and all went well (although VERY slowly at times) until the last line:

      sudo apt install -y dump1090-fa

When it reported it could not find dump1090-fa

      Any thoughts?

This command needs to work first:

        sudo apt update

        It won't find dump1090-fa otherwise.

Have you tried disabling IPv6 like i suggested?
        Code:
        sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1
        sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6=1
        Then try my script again.

          Oblivian:

Reason I can't tell you what install package I used is because there are so many confusing different posts.

Can you give me a link to a Raspberry pi suitable image for the SD card and I'll start again.

I'm using the same stick I have uses successfully under
Windows before I was forced to Linux.
When in Windows it is reported as RTL2832U

I'll start again from the top with what ever package you recommend.
          Regards
          David

            That may be.

But you either followed someone's instructions.

And did lots of manual steps.

Or applied an automated image via fr24s website. Which is about 3 steps.

            Both have very different outcomes

I started with an image but it didn't work as advertised so I've been trying suggestions since.
              What image do you recommend?

Seems you missed some of my posts.

The apt update problem you have will likely reoccur with other images, it is probably connected to your internet connection offering IPv6 that doesn't actually work.
                Or something along those lines.

I would recommend starting with a fresh Raspbian Lite image and going from there.
But as i said, might as well find the problem now because the apt update problem will be there on a fresh image as well.

In your endeavor to install dump1090-fa manually, this command likely didn't work:
                Code:
                sudo apt update
The apt install command can't find the package if apt update isn't working properly.

Have you tried disabling IPv6 like i suggested?
                Code:
                sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1
                sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6=1

Just write PI24 image to your microSD card. This is simplest solution for feeding FR24 from Raspberry Pi.

                  To download PI24 image:

                  For instructions:
The world’s most popular flight tracker. Track planes in real-time on our flight tracker map and get up-to-date flight status & airport information.

OK. I quite understand Oblivian you need to know exactly what one has done before you can help.

So I've started again from the very beginning.

This is what I've done, written as a guide to other beginners. I appreciate how hard it is for people who are deeply ingrained in an operating system to realise just how impenetrable it is to beginners.
This lists some of the traps into which I fell, despite 50 years experience in computers.

Use Windows explorer to format a 4GB SD card FAT 32

Use your browser to go to https://www.flightradar24.com/build-your-own
Follow the link to download the latest version of the program.
which is fr24-raspberry-pi-latest.img.ZIP Note the double ending, .zip and .img

Use a program like WINZIP to UNZIP this file to fr24-raspberry-pi-latest.img

As instructed on the web page use Win32DiskImager to write the .IMG file to SD card.
(NB it will recognise the file ending in .zip and happily write something to the SD card) but your Pi will not recognise it.

                    plug SD into Pi
                    Add:
                    A RTL2832U dongle and aerial
a Network Cable connected to your router
                    and then Power on Pi
you should get a Solid red LED, a solid Yellow LED and 2 Green LEDS

The web page ends with an "Activate new receiver link"..... which did not work.
But there is a click "here" link for such occasions.

I clicked it and it says "SSH into your Raspberry Pi and execute this command:"
                    sudo bash -c "$(wget -O - https://repo-feed.flightradar24.com/install_fr24_rpi.sh)"

What wonderful crystal clear instructions to someone who has never had a Pi before and knows nothing of Linux!
It is about here you begin to wonder if FR24 want more data!
I'm a beginner! 1:What is SSH 2: How do you execute commands on a Pi? I don't know, I've never seen a Pi before (and don't want to see one again)

After much searching I discover what you need to do is:
1: Download a program called Putty to your P.C.
2: Go to your router's home page (often 192.168.0.1) and see what address your Pi has been allocated, (192.168.0.23 in my case)
3: Start Putty, in SSH mode, connect to 192.168.0.23 (or whatever address yours has.)
4: Log into the Pi by entering:
                    5: User name Pi
                    6: Password Raspberry
7: A FR24 Logo and message should appear.
8: Copy the string above from your browser
9: RIGHT click in Putty at the cursor. (which pastes it into Putty)
                    10: press Enter

Putty now goes into Cinema science fiction mode with many scrolling pages of DOS like text.

What is supposed to happen now I don't know but this is what I got.

I did try your previous helpful suggestion.
When the automatic installation didn't work I tried the manual which work until the line I quoted.

I didn't see your post before I started again from scratch.

                      Thank you too.

As you will see from MEGA post above I have tried exactly that "Simple" approach
Even after I managed to get past the Gotchas and worked out how to do the things it asks for it still didn't work.

But at least you can now all see where I am and how I got here

                      Thanks again.

As expected it's the same problem again. (Failure to resolve)

Execute these command to disable IPv6 and change the DNS server:

                        Code:
                        sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1
                        sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6=1
                        sudo sed -i -e '0,/nameserver/{s/nameserver.*/nameserver 8.8.8.8/}' /etc/resolv.conf
Then just try running the install script again and again until it finishes.

It seems that it's working sometimes, so i would suspect your internet connection is intermittent somehow.

You did everything correct. It is FR24 fault that at activation, they instruct a PI24 image user to give following command which creates a mess:

                            sudo bash -c "$(wget -O - https://repo-feed.flightradar24.com/install_fr24_rpi.sh)"

Do NOT use above command. Use following command:

                            fr24feed --signup

                            Please see this guide:

                            2019 - PI24 (Image) QuickStart Guide

It tells not to use bash command and use fr24feed --signup
                            STEP-5: ACTIVATION

It also guides that to issue commands use PuTTY.

Re targeting me as unhelpful for asking the question.

Please remember I'm a user too. I taught myself just like most.
Support staff on email would have probably asked the similar questions

It's not that we can't help until we know that information. But like how the others have since found it helps identify if futher suggestions will end In the same result/worse. Or actually improve things.

if people followed the pre built instructions from the web or not. Determines where we can improve
we know that if those are followed, are not exactly intuative. And is part of the reason we attempt to the write them here and get as much info from users as possible as issues arise.
