The downside to cheaper uniden handhelds is VHF is often garbage.

      - I have to be at he airport to hear most conversations from tower or if aircraft not overhead with external antenna
Which is why most will go for a 2nd hand AOR or Yaesu and such

Also it's best to use another better antenna with the handheld scanner.

Most people like this type of antenna.

        Hand-held Aerial - MRW - 100

Someone reviewed it on this page under the review tab.
swapped this with the supplied manufacturers aerial for a unit and it improved my scanners reception by about 40%.

I've been looking for a new Airband scanner and have been considering the uniden model UBC-125XLT.
However, the scanner I do have Realistic Pro 43 Hyperscan works well despite being quite old, but works even better having increased the height of my aerial.
The aerial was quite high anyway, but have raised by almost 2m.
I could just make out LHR approach and now I can hear both sides of the conversation very well.
I'm approx 70 miles away as the "crow flies"
Aerial height appears to be key.

Hi, I have a 125XLT and it is brill, get a range to the Scottish borders (approx. 200 miles away), out to South Wales, North Sea and down to around BHX. I am in Ripley, Derbys, to give you an idea of range. I can even get MAN tower and DSA tower. I run off approx. 1.5m extendable aerial. Not the one supplied - I forget which now

Hello mfloyd – Glad to hear that you are pleased with your 125XLT as I have just ordered one :-) and should be taking delivery soon. Your range is excellent. I’m based in Kent and receive perfect reception of London Control picking up aircraft as far as Jersey and well into Northern France on route to LHR and LGW. I can hear LHR approach both sides and LGW approach but not as clear from ATC. Yet as the crow flies LGW is nearer, must be some hills in the way. So I may have to increase the height of my antenna again or perhaps buy another antenna (Not sure which).
I guess the ultimate goal would be to hear both LHR and LGW tower, but that may be asking too much. To improve sound quality I connect my current scanner through my HI Fi and it sounds great.
