Biofuel blend for jets OK'd
LONDON -- Airlines have won the backing of a U.S.-based technical-standards group to power their planes with a blend of traditional fuel and biofuel from inedible plants, the Air Transport Association said Thursday.
Fuel processed from organic waste or nonfood materials, such as algae or wood chips, may comprise as much as 50 percent of the total fuel burned to power passenger flights, ATA spokesman Steve Lott and a Boeing official said.

Biofuel-powered jet flies across the Atlantic
The Honeywell-operated Gulfstream G450 jet left Morristown, N.J., at 9 p.m. on Friday and landed at Le Bourget airport outside Paris
Paris 2011: Honeywell Record Flight Brings Biofuel to the Paris Air Show
"Honeywell made history here in Paris on Saturday morning, landing its Gulfstream G450 jet at Le Bourget after the first transatlantic flight using biofuel. The trip’s green credentials can be measured in the 5.5 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) saved in the course of the seven-hour flight from the New York-area Morristown Airport.
In fact, the aircraft crossed the Pond only partly powered by biofuel. The G450’s fuel system was set so that number-one (left) engine burned a 50/50 blend of “Honeywell Green Jet Fuel” and standard jet-A fuel, while the other engine consumed pure jet-A." By: Kirby J. Harrison

American Airlines Bets Billions on Greener Jets
American Airlines yesterday announced what it says is the largest aircraft order in history -- and one that will make its fleet the nation's most fuel-efficient.
The massive new order -- 460 planes from Boeing and Airbus, with an option for 465 more -- is focused on bringing even more fuel efficiency to its business: The first shipment of aircraft will be 35 percent more fuel efficient than models they'll be replacing, while the second batch will boost efficiency another 15 percent to 20 percent.

European airlines to start controversial biofuel-powered flights

The use of plant-based fuels for flights, backed by the EU, could contribute to higher food prices and increased greenhouse gas emissions
Europe’s biggest airlines, including British Airways, Lufthansa and KLM have announced a major biofuels drive despite UN calls to limit biofuel growth.
A glitzy gathering of the elite of Europe’s airline industry in Paris this week saw the launch of a major PR offensive to highlight the move towards replacing fossil fuels with biofuels- liquid fuels made from crops plants such as oil palm and jatropha.
