    Overcoming Calamities

If you use dongles and a Windows operating system, in order to recover from calamities or unintentional power failures two problems occur.

    1. Your computer doesn't restart when the power and internet returns.

    2. After a power failure when you manually start your system, you log on and all you see is the desktop with no programs running that were before the power failure.

I AM NO EXPERT HERE WITH THE NEWER WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEMS SO WILL JUST WALK YOU THROUGH A SENARIO THAT WORKS ON XP PRO.

Microsoft in their wisdom changes the names of things that do the same thing. When possible I will give you the new name for systems I know.

    Gathering Information

If you have ICONs for you Dongle or Dongles and your FR24 Feed, right click on them and select Properties. Copy the locations of the files including any enclosing quotation marks and paste them in Notepad for later copying and pasting.

Know your Windows computer name and your user name and if necessary password.

If you don't already know how to enter the BIOs Setup, on restart look that information up. Award bios uses holding the DELETE key during the hardware detection, to enter the BIOS Setup. Once you enter the setup, look for:

    Power Management Setup

Use the Arrow keys to scroll up or down and the enter key to select.

Look for Power Management Setup and press Enter.

Look for an ITEM in the list called AC BACK FUNCTION and scroll to it until its value is highlighted and press enter. The value that was selected by the manufacturer was to not restart the computer on power failure. Use the arror key to select FULL-ON and press enter. Next press F10 to save and reboot. Windows will load normally.

Once windows loads like it always has, pull the power cord, count to 5 and replug it. The computer will start and load windows normally. If you are skeptical, try it several times. None of the Windows functions like REBOOT or SHUTDOWN are affected by the BIOS adjustments.

Getting Programs to Load on Start-UP

My purpose with this exercise is to get stuff to run automatically when Windows starts. For several generations of Windows, this has been available but seldom used by users. Microsoft changes the names of the terms from generation to generation and calls it progress.

In my case, I have 2 dongles, serial number 1 and serial number 2. Serial number 1 is used to connect to the FR24 Feeding software via /30003 Basestation type TCP Port in its configuration. Serial number 1 is also used as a concentrator for Serial number 2. If in your data gathering you have some switches in the configuration of the different Icons on the desktop, these are important and should have been pasted to your notepad.

    Getting Started

A trusty way to find the the SCHEDULED TASKS folder is in the Control Panel. Open the SCHEDULED TASKS folder.

    scheduledtasks.jpg

Right clicking on one and selecting properties will reveal a tasks settings as the next picture shows.

    beta2_10task.jpg

In this exercise you will create a task for the RTL1090 program and one for the FR24 Feeder.

Select Add Scheduled Task and it will start the Wizard which you will complete for the RT1090. Running the Wizard again for the FR24 Feeder will be identical.

This will be a multipart message since the 5 picture limit but each picture will be annointed for teaching.

We're almost finished with the Wizard. Continue on to Pt. 3.

Select Add Scheduled Task and it will start the Wizard which you will complete for the RT1090. Running the Wizard again for the FR24 Feeder will be identical.

      Testing your SCHEDULED TASKS

If you have an error, a red X is appear in the task name. Right mouse click and select Properties. All of the tasks are to be run when you are logged on. If you have left the Password blank because that is what it is, check the checkbox for Run Only If Logged On. If you have special switches for your program paste them to the Run Line. When you click Apply and ok the RED X in the scheduled task will be substituted with a clock icon.

Now that we have a task name with the clock symbol we can trial run it by a right mouse click on the task and selecting run. The item will pop up on the desktop. Back in the Task Scheduler, we can stop it with another right click on the task name and selecting End Task.

When you are finished creating and testing SCHEDULED TASKS, pull the computer power plug and count to 5 and reinsert it. The computer will start itself and load windows with the Tasks you created on the Desktop and running. You might think something did not start because some of the tasks stack on top of one another. Drag the top one away and you will see the other one running also.

When you have been successful with the dongle and FR24 Feeder program tasks, the other opportunities to use the Task Scheduler will pop into your mind. Adding a 3G dongle for internet to start automatically is an idea for those that rely on 3G for internet.

If All Else seems OK....Pull the power cord and try it out..

Living in Paradise makes one appreciative of the abundance of reliable power. Off and On is the norm here.

        Hi John,
thanks for your advice on automated restart.
I just want to add a little detail.
        1. When RTL1090 starts somehow we have to mention to it that we need the Start button pushed.
So, at the scheduled task that wakes up RTL1090, we choose properties and at the run command, at the end we add
        /30003 /run
with a space in front, so that the application starts and the basestation is defined and the Start button is pressed.
        2. For the FR24, we check the Autostart checkbox at the application itself.

        All the best from Greece.

Hi Yanni, your name is famous.

The addition of the command line /30003 /run is not really necessary if RTL1090 Beta 102 is being used and ticks are in the same boxes on the CONFIG screen. Your point about the autostart tick in the feed software is correct to get it to start automatically.

My example configuration was for two dongles with different serial numbers to associate ports to the specific serial numbers on start-up. That way it doesn't matter which starts first, each one has its ports predefined.
