We don't have issues with lightning here but it's an item on my list
Hope I didn't offend anyone with that caution about an antenna's potential probability to by struck by lightning (i.e. this thread has been heavily censored) . But it is something that is known and has a probability of occurring depending on location. All antennas that are elevated above other surrounding structures need to have lightening protection.

Thats because I hit delete instead of move incorrectly.

        However:
This thread is intended to help newcomers and those starting out with aircraft tracking to get a feel of what DIY hardware modifications or additions can be used outside the usual basic kit items to extend or improve range.

Please ask posters questions about their setup or for help in replicating some of these in the other thread here http://forum.flightradar24.com/threa...cussion-Thread

              My Mobile Setup

              (1) Choping-off whip to a length resonant at 1090 Mhz greately improves max range / plane count. Please see sketch below.

              (2) Placing the mag-mount base over a metallic surface (sheet/can/window sill (if metallic)/car roof) provides a better groundplane and further improves performance.

                My Default Setup
                Photo shows antenna (Cantenna) only.
Not shown in photo are the DVB-T dongle & Raspberry Pi, which are on the floor below the antenna.
                Cantenna >> 12 ft / 4 m RG6 Coax >> 6 inch / 15 cm RG174 pigtail F to MCX >> DVB-T Dongle directly plugged-in into Ras Pi >> Ras PI >> 15 ft / 5 m Ethernet cable to Router

[Receiver] Not a beauty, but (almost) a BEAST!

This is my quick and dirty shoebox feeder, made out of a (horribly inexpensive ) recycled fruit crate:

                        - Raspi B+
                        - Powered USB - Hub
                        - WiFi connection
                        - 5V supply with ferrite core filter
                        - test antenna on the top (antenna that was delivered with the stick, shortened to 6,5cm)
                        - productive antenna under the roof
                        - Aircraft noise feed to
                        Code:
                        www.DFLD.de

                        Beast1.jpg
                        Beast3.jpg

                        Software

                        On Raspi under the roof:
                        FR24 feeder
                        DFLD feeder
                        XRDP remote access

                        On my Windows Workstation:
                        Remote Desktop to the Raspi
                        Dump1090
                        VirtualRadar
                        DFLD Historical Noise record
                        DFLD Real-time Noise radar

                          Great, congratulations!
It does not matter how it looks, as long as it performs good. Any way it is good looking as well.

Is 6,5cm length of removable part?

That is a mighty neat build! Care to elaborate what is in the box, besides the FR24 receiver?
