  • Question about dongle.

Are this two dongles the same?
    ebay.co.uk/itm/332016198518
    shop.strato.de/epages/64807909.sf/secf4d2984b0a/?ObjectPath=/Shops/64807909/Products/53200
I want to know if they are the same because the difference in price is considerable I would also like to know if there is another dongle that has better specifications than this ones with a similar price to the second one because I want to buy one...
    Thanks,
    Willfrd

If you want to use a DVB-T SDR for Mode-S 1090 MHz messages, look at FlightAware's Pro Stick or Pro Stick Plus.

These have an in-built amplifier and come with an SMA connector for use with specialist 1090 MHz antennae. The ones you mention have MCX connectors.

Google it. I won't post a link as FR24 may object.

I fully agree with Mike (Anmer).

I have 3 RPi. I originally used DVB-T (RTL2832U+R820T) generic (black) with all three.

Subsequently I replaced 2 generic black DVB-T by Flightaware ProStick (orange) + FA filter, and message rate, maximum range, and number of planes increased.

Yesterday I got ProStick Plus (dark blue) with built-in filter. Tried with one of systems which has Quick Spider antenna.

        Result/observation:
Performance of ProStick Plus (blue) is same as ProStick (orange) + FA filter.

For those who want to know about main features of ProStick:

        ProStick (orange) = DVB-T (generic, blue, RTL2832U+R820T2) + TXO + built-in Pre Amplifier.

        ProStick Plus (dark blue) = DVB-T (generic, blue, RTL2832U+R820T2) + TXO + built-in Pre Amplifier+ built-in SAW Filter 1090 mhz.

Thanks for your answer at the end probably I am gouing to pick the ProStick because in may case its worth to give up in the in-built 1090 filter of the ProStick Plus because I may want to use the dongle in the future for other dvb-t uses, because if I am not wrong (please correct me if I am), if I pick the ProStick Plus I won´t be able to tune it for another frecuency as I could with the ProStick and the R820T, again please correct me if I am wrong.
          Thanks,

You are right. If you want to recieve frequencies other than 1090 mhz do NOT purchase ProStick Plus.

The ProStick (orange) is good for a wider band of frequencies than the Plus version. However how wide, I am not sure, it depends on the bandwidth of the pre-amplifier. This needs to be investigated further if you want to use it for frequencies too low or too high than 1090.

Please visit Flightaware website and forums and ask there about the bandwidth of ProStick (orange).

Yes both are same. There is no advantage in buying the costlier one.

However there is a better version available at ebay which has a better chip. The black one has chip set .RTL2832U+R820T, while blue one has newer version chipset RTL2832U+R820T2. The prices of black & blue are marginally different, but people have reported blue one with newer chip performs slightly better.

Quote from Flightaware forums regarding frequency range of Pro Sick:
The tuner chip R820T/R820T2 go from 24-1760 MHz (but with reduced performance above 1500 MHz).
The prostick is an RTL receiver so it can listen to 24-1800MHz. It is not the best RTL dongle for below 600Mhz. You will be able to listen to VHF stations but the gain and NF is not flat and you might get some extra noise from harmonics. The performance of the amp is best around the mid range band of the RTL dongle from 600-1200 Mhz.
