I have just come across an interesting presentation about ADS-B security though it is almost 2 years old. As ADS-B signals are unauthenticated and unencrypted, hackers can insert a fake aircraft easily into ADS-B system and cause trouble in aircraft safety. FAA responded that “An FAA ADS-B security action plan identified and mitigated risks and monitors the progress of corrective action”. ADS-B DF19 (used mainly by military) can encrypt ADS-B signal transmission. If someday FAA mandates ADS-B signals must be encrypted, amateurs no longer decode the ADS-B signals easily.
