  • If I fitted a ADS-B transponder to my light aircraft, would it show up on the site?

Just a bit of idle curiosity: If I bought a ADS-B transponder and stuck it on a microlight and flew it around, would it show up on this website?
Would I be allowed to do this, and how much do these transponders cost?

This would be purely for ego-related reasons, and of no use to anyone ever.

    Thanks!

If the transponder is turned on and set to send out full ADS-B data.
It will show up on the site if it's in range of the receiver uploading to FR24.

Garmin have a nice page about ADSB here http://www.garmin.com/us/intheair/ads-b/ ... the way I read it people with microlights will need ads-b out if they fly within 30 miles of most primary Class B airports http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._United_States

I read it as about $5.5k for a GDL 88 with the required GPS functionality.

The main issue with microlight is to reach enough altitude to get into coverage of a receiver.

I'm in Basingstoke in the UK. 40 km from London Heathrow. What altitude would I need to climb to?

Have you thought of buying second hand equipment from Kemble: http://www.airsalvage.co.uk/

This site might be more useful: http://www.sky-craft.co.uk/

If you have full ADS-B fitted you should be visible on Flightradar24 above 500 feet in the Basingstoke area.

Theoretically, you would only need to go a couple of hundred feet above ground. The nearest receiver is at Southampton airport. Between Hatch Warren and Southampton airport there is a high(ish) bit of ground between Dummer & Farleigh Wallop.
Are you one of those microlights that pass just south of my house in Hatch Warren "stalking" the M3?

The following is applicable only if you were in Australia but gives you an overall view of some of the requirements for fitment of ADS-B in/out to an aircraft. There are a number of requirements to be met before doing so. It's abit more complex than simply 'sticking it in your microlight' but as others have stated, you will show on FR24 map if the conditions they have stated are met.

(FAQ from Air Services Australia which interestingly makes mention of websites such as FR24).

e.g. "Do I need an endorsement or FPA on my instrument rating to use
                ADS-B?

No, but it is important that you know how the ADS-B system works in the aircraft you fly and
that you observe the ATC surveillance procedures set out in the AI."

ADS-B is not being implemented (certainly not here in Australia) just for fun. I should think regulations would apply no matter what country you are anticipating this kind of situation and need to be complied with.

The UK CAA has plenty of reading material to familiarise yourself with if you are serious. (search 'ADS-B' on their site http://www.caa.co.uk/).

                Regards,
                Gregg

I can see the attraction of stalking the M3 ... nice wide flat area if you need to put down in a hurry.

Does FR24 have an icon suitable for a MicroLight?

I got asked a similar question form a man who is flying with a group of several gliders fitted with ADS-B equipment. If the FR24 box would see them, or even send them to their glider website. I didn't know what to answer?

FR24 will plot the position of anything sending correctly formatted ADS-B signals - that include ground traffic at airports as well as aircraft ... as long as the signal is recieved by a radar feeding FR24.
