Just wondering what kind of sound you expected ?

Aircraft jet engines taking off sound or those you heard from porno sites ?

Just wanted to know if there was a way to pick up air traffic, as I only live 24 miles from Heathrow.

If FR24 succeed in installing 70,000 video camera in the cockpits of 70,000 aircrafts and perform live video streaming, we then can hear live sound from the aircrafts.

...and the cockpit view wouldn't need to rely on the google earth API...

You could record the aircraft sounds as wav files, pin the wav files to the windows start bar and play them when a plane came near

              Pete,
now that the pelicans have had their fun (except for Speedbird who has put you on the right track) you can see that for the UK you'll need a scanner as it's illegal to re-broadcast ATC communications as it also is in many countries. There would be many reasonably priced brands around that would get you going or expensive types but i cant recommend any as I'm in Australia. Search the net if you want to check them out. You may also need an external antenna depending on the terrain surrounding you or the actual frequencies you may wish to listen to.
For other countries there's http://www.liveatc.net/ which covers a vast area of the world and is expanding all the time. There's also http://www.globaltuners.com/ but you'll need to sign up (it's free) and you can operate the radios yourself. I havent been on it for some time so I'm not sure how the coverage is at the moment.
It's a lot of fun to watch FR24, listen to live atc and watch the live webcams at many airports around the world all at the same time.

              Hope this helps. Regards,
              Gregg
