Update from Christchurch Airport as of 3:30pm

Update from Christchurch Airport as of 3:30pm.

While this morning’s snowfall has now been cleared from the runway and apron at Christchurch Airport, the impacts of this storm are still being felt by travellers.
Some flights in and out remain disrupted due to the weather conditions affecting other airports throughout the lower half of the South Island preventing inbound and outbound aircraft movements.
Passengers are reminded to check with their airlines before commencing travel.
It is expected to still take some time before normal scheduling resumes.
The airport is conscious more snow is forecast for overnight.
Preparations are in place should this eventuate.

Certainly was nice. Love to go back for more.

It was safer to shut gear down than risk a fire with an empty house and earthquakes still occurring.

Some interesting movements in/out of NZ with pleanty of Rugby Teams paying the major ports a visit.

VH-YIB, the 2nd new Virgin livery B738 passed through here for work last week and left for its new home in Brisbane tonight NZ time. Also have a visit from Qantas/Atlas Air B744 N409MC tonight - Doing a freight drop before going to Guam.

The US Antartic re-supply work is in full swing also. A few C17 flights to the ice done so far (one left the day I did, I could see it loading and shutting cargo as I was in my plane loading and doing pushback)

Unfortunately I have to be watching PP to capture these, as they are only Mode-S my micro does not add them to the database automatically. 08-8195 did first season flight morning of the 20th Aug.

                  Fire contained at Christchurch airport

Three crews of firefighters battled a blaze in a maintenance building at Christchurch International Airport about noon.
Fire Communications Centre shift manager Andrew Norris said firefighting crews from Harewood and St Albans were sent to the airport at 12.04pm.
They were met by firefighters based at the airport and extinguished the blaze before it could spread to other buildings.
"On arrival, the fire was well involved,'' Norris said.
Christchurch Airport communications manger Yvonne Densem said the fire broke out in the Christchurch Engine Centre, an airport maintenance building.
Airport operations and flights were unaffected.

If I was stationed there at present, I would have photos..

That is where I am stationed sometimes fulltime for a month when in rotation. The CHC Engine centre. Is how I have finger on pulse to some of the air movements.

Hi all. Just bought the Pro iPhone app when I saw traffic is now shown around NZ. But it seems there is a bit of a hole around NZWN? I see stuff approaching from north, south and occasionally west and then it disappears. Bit of a downer as NZWN is my 'local'. In fact I live under the RWY16 ILS.

Unfortunately I'm pretty much blind to the south and west, so not much point in setting up a feed here. What's the general cost for a setup as I might be able to find someone in a better place?

                        You are correct.

I cover (NZCH1) as far as just south of Lake Rotoiti, which is then picked up by Palmerston Nth (NZPM) as they cross nelson. BUT, my CHC-WLG flights disapear (possibly my sky dish in the way) close to Kaikoura never to be seen again.

My antenna was a DIY job made of a welding rod, approx cost.. $6 Connectors come to around $40, and then cable is as much as you want to spend for quality low loss. I use a simple USB Pic based decoder and get away with it, which was $115 to my door at the time.

Mike in PN has had the microADSB (mine) a 'Beast' and an official unit with good results from them. It gets better the more you spend.

Thanks. I have been studying flights this afternoon. In addition to losing NZCH-NZWN flights around Kaikoura, anything north of here seems to cut out abeam Paraparaumu (NZPP). I heard a QFA take off (to the north) earlier for Sydney and it wasn't picked up until over Golden Bay and even then was spotty.

I guess the biggest trouble with Wellington is all these flippin' hills around. I could probably fill in the gap south of NZPP, but would then cut out abruptly just south of Tawa as they disappear behind a dirty great hill behind my house. Westward I might get something, but again, large hills (Colonial Knob) so I'd expect only at highish altitudes. I reckon I'd get a good swathe around the NE direction but until Eagle and Air Nelson get fitted that would not pick up much.

Hmmm. I know a guy who lives just south of NZPP. Seems like that might be a good spot as it's relatively flat in the S-W-N directions. He's run an online weather station before. From what I read everything runs with Windows software?

Tends to yes. I also forgot you need software like PlanePlotter which is 25pound to output the data into usable format if you don't get a receiver with its own software like basestation.

I've not heard of any other OS variant so far but there are bound to be some enthusiasts out there working on it.

                              Christchurch Airport Supports Local Schools

Some Christchurch schoolboys who worked hard to help repair their school’s broken goalposts have been rewarded with a training session with some of their Canterbury rugby heroes.
The boys were among a group of 20 treated to the session by CRFU and one of its sponsors, Christchurch International Airport Ltd.
The boys were selected by their schools, Fendalton Primary School and Burnside Primary School and put through their paces by Canterbury coach Tabai Matson, with players Andrew Olorenshaw, Ash Parker, Nasi Manu, Robbie Fruean and Tyler Bleyendaal. At the end of the session, the boys had time for photos and autographs, as well as some goodie bags from MORE FM.

                              more.......................
