Qantas flights in the 6000 series are generally repositioning flights. This particular one seemed to receive a hold near CHC to await clearance into ZQN and as yet hasnt landed there.
QF6001 has just performed what looks to be a possible missed approach at ZQN (I am not familiar with the actual procedures there). No idea how long it can stay airborne or where it will eventually land.

How do flightaware get the data that FR24 don't?

Read the press release about the NZ coverage on FA.

Looks like they only have 7 active feeders and 4 offline at this time for New Zealand.
with Oblivian being the top feeder for that country :-)

          • ASDI. Similar to the FAA data FR24 purchase for over the US. And more recently their own ADSB feeders too

Confused : Are they also getting data from the recently installed 'Ofiicail ADS-B' system with MLAT? (or just from home feeders)

Both. Their location information is supplied by CAA, how they get it is anyones guess. Presumably CAAs own primary radar network mesh.

They also recently opened up to give out feeders, and ask for current feeders to join in with supplying them ADSB feeds to compliment the data, I was one of the first in the south to do so however appears to be about 3 or 4 now.

                • Hmm, it would be good if FR24 could also access the CAA data in exchange for premium membership - one hand washes the other

                  • I am getting apparently successful Multilat positions for Air Nelson planes but they don't seem correct according to what Flight Aware tells me. I find it confusing to get a good position that conflicts with the supposed Flight Aware position. Has anyone else noticed this odd result?

                    • The CAA/FA stuff may well be historical up to a few mins.. nothings been clarified.

                        • Thats just IPv6 details, nothing to worry about. Since there is a global shortage on IP addresses, they are shifting to a new longer format, that also happens to include details about the hardware and its MAC address (which is individual to every piece of hardware)

I get hit and miss MLAT in PP, sometimes it does, most times it fails. Often due to the data for some reason getting to be in bursts (as mentioned in the past) and not smooth. So Ill see a range of 20 or so appear from other feeders, and 1 by 1 the list degrades to just my own data, then a number of seconds later repeat. May have something to do with me being a sector controller, but not sure.

Thanks for the info . I will edit my post, just in case. One Mlat appeared up by Auckland and I know it was down near ChCh. Very strange!

                            • Interesting to see how far south I can see : N705JM was seen over Dunedin at FL330 and heading south to Invercargill; I lost it halfway between those two cities. It is now heading North on no particular route. Must be on a navigational exercise.

If its going over the airports, may be calibration/testing of avionics upgrade.

As with previous mention, shes nearly ready for handover to owners after total re-fit and paint in CHC. I know I wouldn't wan't one that kept rattling if I paid as much for it
