  • Hi Mike,

Just to ask are you permanently stopping posting new FR24 receivers activated at the new feeder spotted thread or are you just very very busy for the past month?

    Comment

    • I have been quite busy last weeks. Every time I open up the thread to catch up something happens so I have to postpone again. Currently in number of receivers not posted has reached 180. I hope to be able to catch up soon.

CubieBoard2 as a little bit more horsepower than Rpi. Feeding 3 websites with dump1090 decoding 40 A/C, CPU usage barely goes over 15%. It allows me to underclock the CPU to 460 MHz so it runs very cool.
My current installation only use 8m of cable. The Cubieboard connects to internet through WiFi.

Unfortunately I have no contact for this in Nha Trand or Quy Nhon area.

I thought about applying for a receiver, but I cannot comply with FR24 requirements.
We often have power cuts that can last up to 12 hours. I will not run the generator all day long for the FR24 receiver.
Also I'm quite afraid I will need to pay import taxes just to receive the box.

        Regards,
        Yan.

        Hello xv4y,

I have been looking around your area and notice your feed has been up, perhaps I am not looking when it's down but your feed looks decent. I think you should re-think about applying for the FR24 kit. You get a good antenna which I think should help with coverage from your area. If it down for about 12 hours there is no big, so long your feed comes back when power is restored that is ok. Feeders from Pontianak & Banmjarmasin seems to have power issues and they go on and off ( and so do some receivers around the world). So I think you need not to be too worried by that. As for customs charges, FR24 will reimburse you back the handling fees/customs fee upon when you contact them about the charges.

Please have a think about it. ciao.

          • I have been feeding FR24 data now for over a month. I'm using a Raspberry Pi, piopawlu application, and a homebrew antenna. The status command shows over 40 AC in 1 packet during busy times, and less when air traffic is low. I live near near LAX, the Los Angeles area. The FR24 graphs for my account shows what looks good to me. But, I do not know if this is low, average, or high. If it's average,
I could raise my antenna 5' or more. So, how does one know how he/she stands in this volunteer program?

That's only one second of activity. That seems to be about the same as you. My antenna is 20' from ground and getting out about 200NM in all directions. I think that's about the best you can do on average.

Your log looks good. I bet your radar call sign is Daggett. I'm feeding a station near Van Nuys, CA. Are you using your own equipment?
Think I'll put my antenna on chimney mast. I might do better, for it's higher.
                Thanks, Don

                • Does FR24 send positions inside an encrypted connection?

                  • Hello North Borneo Radar,

I am interested in applying for a FR24 box and have good coverage of the airport VIDP. Would I qualify or do you have sufficient feeders in the area? I am also trying my hand at setting up a RPi - its still in the works but Ive read somewhere that FR24 prefers F- to T-.

                      Hi oplus94,

Thanks for your post, your first here!

Actually, I am not employed by FR24 so I am unable to comment whether your area VIDP has sufficient feeders or not. Besides that, I am also unfamiliar with FR24's coverage at India as it is not a region I observe.

Now about you thinking to apply for a FR24 box, it is best to apply so that FR24 can assess the suitability of your application. They have the general picture and where their other receivers are located so are best in place to assess and determine whether you are able to improve coverage at VIDP. Being at Delhi, I would assume FR24 has received quite a lot of applications and has kept most in file, just apply and see how I guess. Application takes 7-365 days and FR24 would not say your application is unsuccessful. They just keep every application in file for future use.

As for preferring F- over T-, that is generally correct. However for me I am not too worried about this F receiver showing more than that receiver so on and so forth. FR24 cannot satisfy each feeder's quest to see their radar code get displayed. Having good coverage is always the key.

Good luck in your work to set up a receiver using the Rpi. You should have looked into the Rpi thread at technical matters I assume, which contains lots of info.

                      • Thank you very much North Borneo Radar for welcoming me here and for a very detailed and useful reply. I will go ahead and put in an application for the receiver. In the meanwhile, I am waiting for the RTL dongle to arrive from China. Nothing's available locally - so I guess it is going to be a long wait. My Rpi 2 board arrived last Friday so I am itching to get started!

I'm using a FR24 sponsored box. They approved my app the same day I submitted it. Not really that close to Daggett. but I think they use the closest airport for the acronym.

I sent the form in and thought I should be approved, but didn't get it. Probably FR24 has enough coverage in this area already.
So I built my own stuff and sending data and FR24 sees it.
