Hi Herman, thanks for the welcome! We are about to head into winter so I have a little while to do some testing. Having said that, I have another Pi in the same size enclosure doing remote gate opening/motion sensing that's just been through a hot summer (including 2 weeks of 38c temps) and it didn't miss a beat. Fingers crossed.

      ... and so on...
I already saw that, but to no avail, could not figure why it would not connect...

So I took another look at the startup script:

      #!/bin/sh
      #Provides: to fr24_feed from:RTL2820
      #Kill all
      /usr/bin/killall fr24feed_arm-rpi_242
      /usr/bin/killall dump1090

#Start dump1090 with local web page
      cd /home/pi/dump1090
      /home/pi/dump1090/dump1090 --enable-agc --net --net-sbs-port 3003 --net-ro-port 31001 --quiet &

      #Start fr24 feeder
      #export FR24AUTHIP=83.140.247.20
      /home/pi/fr24feed_arm-rpi_242 --fr24key=*********** > /tmp/fr24feed.log &

And there it is - dump1090 was started at port 3003 instead 30003. Corrected it, and it's already online.

      Thank you for fresh perspecitve.

                  • Yay! Got it working =)

Hey all - New to the forum but had a Pi for a while, and always loved just watching Flight Radar 24...

Finally got round to getting a dongle and giving this a whirl!!! What a great little tutorial on post 8 by peterhr - thanks for that! Worked a treat, didn't manage to expand my SD card but i'll work on that another day - wanted to get the concept working first.

Bought THIS Dongle for £11.55 from ebay - came next day from Jersey - very happy and seems a good build quality too. (Buyer really helpful also)
It doesn't come with a little antenna, but it does come with an MBX (tiny little one) to male SMA pigtail (about 4 inches long) and then a SMA female to BNC and SMA female to COAX socket.
I grabbed a little bit of COAX cable, stripped 183mm off the end, separated the cores at 180' from each other and stuck it out of my window... worked straight away tracking about 5 planes! COULDN"T BELIEVE IT!

                    =)

I'm going to be installing this properly in my attic, and then having a go at making a home brew collinear arial and see what results I get with that.
My make shift coax arial is literally hung out of the window and i'm tracking planes as far north as St Davids (West Wales) and as far east as Reading.
I am based in Newquay in Cornwall, so I was horrendously supprised at these results from an '£11 whim and play around'.
Definitely got the bug to go bigger! lol

Its defiantly line of sight for sure though, my house is mid terrace and runs pretty much north facing (terrace going east and west).. There was a plane approaching from the south east and the second it passed an imaginary line at my eastern side (About Newton Abbot) it appeared on my screen as being tracked... Need to get on the roof and above of the other side of the house.

Had an issue to begin with at the section of the tutorial where you test your dongle with "rtl_test -t" - It was coming back with some strange error messages... After a bit of googling and a bit of trial and error - it ended up being the USB powered hub I was using (which admittedly was old) wasn't providing enough power and conking out when i was querying the dongle...

                    New hub - issue fixed.

Now got an issue where something is breaking intermittently... Had it running for a good 25 minutes before starting this, and now it randomly fails...

                    a dmesg log states:
                    usb 1-1.2.4: usbfs: usb_submit_urb returned -121
(This is constantly being output on /var/log/debug and /var/log/kern.log when running the fr24.sh script (it stops for a moment then rattles off hundreds of lines...)
Then all of a sudden "cb transfer status: 5, canceling..." will appear on my console and the dump1090 is killed and has to be started again.

Another google here mentions both power issues (can't think it would be as the dongle is the sole device on a 4 port hub using a 5v 1A supply... and also port/connection...
I've used all ports on the hub - no luck and two different cables, no luck either. (Currently using a 10 inch cable that came with an external HDD)
I'll let you know if I figure it out.

                    All in all though...

                    Pretty good =)

Heres a little snapshot of my dump1090 server at 22:20 on friday night (not much air traffic over Cornwall at this time!) I'm based around a bouts where the plane over Newquay is)

Try without the hub at all... I have no problem running my RTL dongle directly off of the Pi USB port.

As to antennna... the 1/2 wave dipole that you made from coax is a pretty darn good one...
I have been trying to build various co-liniears... and they never seem to do as good as the dipole.
I have the same problem with my house and nighbors houses blocking my line of site both east and west.. and some day when I finally settle on an antenna I will get it above the roof lines. Still.. tracking planes 40 to 50 miles away with a minimal antenna basically on the ground is fun.

                      • I don't have a USB hub either, but you might want to get a short USB extender if to provide a mechanical soft or flexible link between the dongle and the Pi if you have a stuff antenna wire connected directly to the dongle.

You don't need to expand the image - I'm running happily on 1Gb

do go to http://forum.flightradar24.com/threa...-Flightradar24 and download the latest RPi feeder software

                        (on the pi do
                        wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...rm-rpi_242.tgz

                        tar -xzf fr24feed_arm-rpi_242.tgz

the update fr24.sh replaceing the feeder with fr24feed_arm-rpi_242

Placing the antenna outside above the roof line will make a considerable difference to the range

I got a mast http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321146611580 (but from a different supplier at lower price) on some wall fixed T&K brackets to mount the antenna (I didn't fancy climbing up the roof) - presently I'm using 3 mast sections to get above roof height.

(I can't view your attached image, sorry)

I'm running a similar setup to yourself with the same Bulgarian Antenna mounted on a 6ft pole mounted above the roof line.

Just curious as to how far you have your dongle away from antenna & what kind of coax your using to feed. At the moment my dongle is in the loft space fed from about 8ft of Webro HD100 but i'm considering trying to move the dongle to beneath the antenna, what are your thoughts?

You get a better range than me - probably less trees around and no rise in ground level to the SE.

I have 4.5m of mast, then the feed moves about 1.5m horizontally before going down about 2.5m and going through the wall - so that's 8.5m of RG6. at the antenna end I have an N-F converter, F-gender changer and an f-plug on the wire, The Pi end of the cable has a TV Coax plug ... since that's what the MCX adaptor wants.

The use of the F-Connectors at the to means I could swap out the gender changer for an LNB in line amp just seal everything up afterwards and power it up the wire.

I did try to use the recommended powered USB 10m cable with the dongle - resounding failure (even running it of a powered USB hub) the dongle wouldnt initialise ... but then again people with PC say it works fine.

I also tried the tiny whip antenna that comes with the dongle (8 floors up, central Birmingham) - that could almost see Amsterdam.

I wouldn't think raising the dongle would help, your downlead losses would be low anyway - to improve might need to move away from the dongle to something more specialised.

I also tried a 10m usb cable on a powered hub & like yourself & it was a total failure. I've thought about putting some kind of amp in line but was a bit nervous about damaging the dongle & have not really been able to find much info regarding which one to use.

I'm quite happy with the range from the dongle & Pi, but always eager to get that little bit more out of it

Then you need to send about 12v-15v up the wire but not into the dongle power inserter http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121321050146 - the antenna is open circuit, so we don't need to worry about blocking the power going on to it.

Then just needs a 12-15v power supply - do measure the voltage it gives before connecting it, if it's over 16v you might damage the amplifier (if it's too low you might not get the results you hope for)

I think we do really well on the dongle - it's not uncommon to see 60-80 aircraft being processed at once.
