Are you sure about the IP address? 192.168.1.90 looks to me as you routers IP address and no your Raspberry PI's.

If my guess is right then log-in to your router (192.168.1.90) login name and password can be found in the manual.

Now you can find the IP addresses for the units you have connected your Raspberry Pi included.

Make a reservation for the Raspberry PI (MAC and IP addresses)

Peterhr, yes antenna is fixed in okay, very strange as when on PC it will pick up around 5 A/C with no issues

ASttigliano, you make this sound like I don't know how to manage a Network, My router IP is 192.168.1.1, my pi's all have DHCP reservations, and as I had been ssh'ing to my pi at 192.168.1.90, I'd think this IP was a dead cert!

If I stop the processes started by the fr24.sh script

        Code:
        pi@raspberrypi ~ $ killall fr24feed_arm-le_233s
        pi@raspberrypi ~ $ killall dump1090
Then (piping the output to a file or I lose the info block immediately)
        Code:
        pi@raspberrypi ~ $ cd /home/pi/dump1090
        pi@raspberrypi ~/dump1090 $ ./dump1090 --interactive --net > /tmp/dump1090.out
        Found 1 device(s):
        0: Realtek, RTL2838UHIDIR, SN: 00000001 (currently selected)
        Found Rafael Micro R820T tuner
        Max available gain is: 49.60
        Setting gain to: 49.60
Exact sample rate is: 2000000.052982 Hz
        Gain reported by device: 49.60
Examine the piped output (this is about 1 seconds worth or it overflows the putty scroll area) - and I had to trim it (posts are limited to 10000 characters)

        Code:
        pi@raspberrypi ~/dump1090 $ cat /tmp/dump1090.out

        Could you try the same?
Do you have another Power supply for the Pi + Dongle (just wondering if the voltage might be a bit low at the dongle if it's struggling)
I've run mine from a couple of android phone chargers OK, but they are probably marginal on the power rating. I doubt if a PC USB socket has enough oomph. People say a 1.5A to 2A supply is needed (maybe tablet charger).

          Bingo!

It was the power supply, now running with a different power supply with a rating of 1A output, and all seems to be running okay now, now that i know this works (hehe) I can look into the possibility of purchasing a new Pi to dedicate the running of fr24. Then I can have the Pi I am using at the moment back for my media server, raspbmc.

Should be s standard clause with the Pi's - if its broke, change the P/S lol I did think this early on, but dismissed it because it's ran a media server fine!!

Great - roughly where are you (nearest city)? - just curious...

I think it is more down to the USB power required just pushing the power supplies over the edge. I have an unbranded 2A supply which cannot provide the sustained power for a PI with a USB device attached yet my 1A HTC supplies work perfectly. If there is no USB device plugged in then both work fine.

Also I have followed the instructions from scratch and it is working well. I like the challenge of getting things running from scratch so using the image was my backstop if needed. Thanks for the write up.
I seem to be living in a flight void area about 40 miles south of Birmingham but regularly get around 8-10 planes using a handmade antenna compared to 1-2 with the internal aerial supplied with the dongle. If I had thought about it more I would have added more elements to my aerial - perhaps when I get more time I will take it down and do this but I happy with my results so far.

BTW I found a couple of typos in the instructions it says widows not Windows and the dump1090 executable is described as dump1050.

You're very welcome - thanks for proof reading the doc.

I find it rewarding to build stuff from scratch - if I can find the time. I think the commercial antennas people sell ar just professional versions of the designs on the net ... so go build them, if they don't work out - it's not cost much. Just do put it high enough to get clear of houses and trees if possible. If you google, people are selling swagged aluminium masts - pack of 4 x 5' sections is about £30 + vat (I'm not sure if they come apart once assembled).

                  ...

For those new to Linux - I've tried to write why & how we're doing stuff not just a set of instructions. Intended as a project you can learn from.

Here's another great tutorial, this is the one I used for installing the software and getting it all to work.
Using a Raspberry Pi and low-cost TV receiver dongle to decode aircraft positions from ADS-B broadcasts.

Does this technique support the MicroADSB dongle?

I got the same setup as you but haven't got the same range. My record reception is ~5km at 350 m altitude (through balcony walls and other buildings) but nothing when a plane passes over my head (clear view). Seems like the e4000 is really lousy compared to the R820T, or i'm really bad at setting up my reciever.
I got a homebrew GP antenna, just like this one: http://x264.nl/dump/ads-b-antenna-gr...ane-proper.jpg
and tried a Coaxial Collinear Antenna (12 elements). http://www.balarad.net/
Tried PPM calibrating against known frequency without any improvements.
Anyone got any suggestions, more then changing to a R820T?

                        [EDIT]
Just changed from e4000 (e4k) to R820T and it was worth it. Just see the 24 hour logs below if you are unsure about changing

All these 'long distance' antenna work by taking the 'reception sphere' that you would get from a single point antenna and squashing the reception from one direction to give more sensitivity to another - squashing the sphere into a donut. They all have a blind spot overhead unless they lay sideways.

You do really need to get your antenna where it's not looking through balcony walls and other buildings to see the sky.

Peter, I am in a spot of bother here. Can you perhaps help? I am using your image, but am getting this error... seems the device is owned by some other process.

You probably don't need to do that rtltest, since the image has all the software installed abd set to autostart ... but if you do want to use rtl-test I would suspect you need to stop dump1090 first by doing 'killall dump1090'

don't forget to update the fr24.sh script with the content of the updated one on the download page and to fix the minutes setting on the cron job (and add your own sharing key)

Yeah, thanks Peter. On doing a TOP i saw DUMP1090 there, so did the pkill (dont we just love that command!)

So excited after 2 weeks of waiting for a dongle to arrive, and now I see:
Its not much, but then again the antenna is indoors ...
