  • Underground power here as well, only issue has been lightning hitting a feeder and a substation causing a low voltage brown out. Otherwise its normally reliable but when it breaks well....

    • Power came back on just after 1pm AEDT but the maintenance I'm doing is taking longer than anticipated. The cockatoos did a bit of damage to the LMR400. I'll post some photos later

Sorry to see you're having so much trouble with both your electrical supply and your equipment. In another life I was an Emergency Service Officer (EMSO) for one of the distribution suppliers up here in Sydney. I could write a book about what people did with either their power supply or the electrical installation in their homes/premises.

I also once had the pleasure of visiting Wagga Wagga (I've had a swim at the Wagga beach) and enjoyed the place immensely, although it was many years ago now.

I hope the thing with the cockies and your power improve in time. Good luck, and hope you can continue uploading/contributing.

Some of our best rugby league players and cricketers have come from your neck of the woods. Must be real good water around there.

        Regards,
        Gregg

        • Rigged it temporarily ATM, so range will be less.

Mobile phone pics, apologies for the quality.

Water here is mostly bore, with ~20% from the river.

The mast is a little lower (~5cm) but is now up, until I can work on a permanent solution to stop the cockatoos.

          • Hi Folks,

Just finished home brewing T-YBBN50 .. And judging by that number on the end I am guessing there are a few of us in the Brisbane AP catchment .. I'm running dump1090 on a Pi.. Currently I have put together a collinear antenna with RG6 and today I mounted it up on my 6ft mast, on a single story house, so it's not up real high, but so far have tracked planes as far north as the northern shoreline of Lake Monduran just NW of Gin Gin, I can get just a little past Casino down south. and maybe 150km out to see in some directions, I have sighted planes just west of Dalby, and to the north west of my position out above some place called Wigton.. The antenna is not tuned and it is not soldered it's pushed together akin to the youtube video which comes up when googling for 1090mhz diy antenna... So I know it's not flash, not proper, but it seems to be working to a certain extent... It should be noted I am a radio novice, I just like tinkering with the Pi's and re-acquainting myself with electronics after 25yrs or so...

            Regards,
            Cameron

            • And I'm offline again! Very lightning active storm moving though. Slow moving and looks to be forming a storm train.

Welcome bhaal! I did the very same thing with my DIY CoCo antenna for the dongle, still does a great job for a cheap DIY job.

              • That's some nasty looking weather.. I don't yet have a lightning arrester for my antenna, but realistically it's not going to matter, there are 3 weather cams up on the same mast, the whole point of those is to capture the storms etc.. I should get cat5 arresters, though I am not sure they will allow POE to traverse the arrester, and I might have to sell one of the kids in order to afford them, will need to look into that (the arresters! not the selling the kids thing).. I don't care to much about frying the Pi's (the cameras are Pis as well) or antenna .. but I would prefer to limit the destruction of the rest of my network... Hmmmm...

                • Interestingly the airport (~10km as the crow flys) only had 11mm but the city has had way more. Lightning was very random, a few close strikes and when you think it's gone you have a bolt from the blue. Thankfully no damage.

In the past I've had lightning fry my 51cm TV as it was still connected to the antenna. With arresters, the towers on the hill (TV repeater, emergency services, council ect) have very expensive arresters, but one had a fault (didn't stop the indirect strike) and took out the TV repeater. Really just down to luck.

So long as your modem/switch/router includes wifi, you can get cheap wifi extenders from China for $20-25 that have a few ether ports included - great for network isolation , though for one with POE, you might still need to sell off one of your kids, or least on a 9 year lease

I've seen cases with two way radio repeaters using said expensive arrestors, one day the alarms activated, that afternoon two of us spent 35 mins trying to find it, we couldnt, base on the melt cable on one side, we determined it was completely obliterated, so nothing would have saved it.

Never too many anywhere and the T feeders always do a great job around Brisbane. Right now, for instance, I can't see anything but T feeders including your new one. I think the T feeders don't get the recognition they deserve because even though they often get beaten to the punch by the F feeders, when there is a power failure or whatever you can count on a T feeder or two popping up that you've not seen before. Some of you guys must run them on batteries or have pedal wireless! Cheers.

                        • Ok, this is bugging me a little... What is the between T and F ??? I am assuming the T is for DIYers and the F is for the FR24 supplied receiver and antenna? I haven't read through all the posts in this thread yet, nor a lot of the others, so forgive me if I am asking something which should be (and probably is) in a FAQ somewhere (that I have missed).. As for my feeder popping up, I was very surprised to see it being used straight away.. I'd love to know the antenna configurations of some of the other T feeders here..

                          Regards,

                            • Another question, I've seen this a few times just recently: 7cf7b8 with Flight as TEST1234 ... Someone has a new toy and forgot to program it?

                              • Sounds like a ground based ADSB testing site.

T- is for non-FR24 equipment (USB dongle, SBS3, ect).
                                F- is for FR24 equipment.
