Boeing to speed 787 delivery to American Airlines

Boeing Co. will speed up its first 787 delivery to American Airlines to November 2014.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission restructuring its deals with Boeing (NYSE: BA), American said it will substitute up to 20 787-8 aircraft for 787-9 aircraft.
American also said it's finalized a 2011 deal to buy 100 Boeing 737 Max airplanes, with deliveries beginning in 2018. American also said it now has to option to buy 60 additional 737 Max airplanes in 2022-2025.
American will have to go before a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for permission to complete the aircraft orders.

Boeing precision navigation for China

Boeing has developed new flight procedures for Xiamen Airlines, an all-Boeing operator, which enables the airline to fly some of the most precise, fuel efficient, satellite based routes available.

In coordination with the Xiamen Airport Group, Xiamen Airlines is the first Chinese airline to use the advanced navigation capability of its Boeing 737 fleet to conduct Required Navigational Performance – Authorization Required (RNP AR) flight operations using flight corridors narrower than a third of a mile across, or what is known in the industry as RNP 0.3. RNP measurements indicate a level of accuracy to which an airplane can fly while navigating using certain instruments, normally satellite-based avionics. A lower RNP value allows greater precision which can reduce flight miles, saving fuel and reducing costs for an airline.

Xiamen Airlines worked in close partnership with Boeing Flight Services and Boeing subsidiary Jeppesen, both part of Boeing Commercial Aviation Services, along with Wuyishan Airport Authority and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to develop the new instrument flight procedures. The airline successfully performed demonstration flights Dec. 18, 2012 to test these highly tailored RNP AR procedures at the Wuyishan Airport, Fujian Province, China.

RNP AR is the most capable form of Required Navigation Performance – enabling airplanes to use Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and onboard avionics to fly precisely predefined flight paths without reliance on ground-based navigation stations. It enables curved approach paths that can avoid terrain or noise-sensitive areas.

First 777 Built at New Rate Rolls Out in Everett

Boeing has rolled out the first 777 built at the program’s increased production rate of 8.3 per month, or 100 airplanes per year, the company announced Thursday. Plans call for delivery of the airplane—a 777 Freighter—to Korean Air in Februar
The production increase began in October, when the first airplane parts entered Boeing’s widebody factory in Everett, Washington. The company has planned for the increase for almost a year.

“As we built the first airplane at the new rate, we saw some of the best production metrics ever,” said airplane development vice president and 777 program chief Scott Fancher. “Our factory is running smoothly and we’ve reduced the time it takes to build a 777 by one day from 49 to 48 days.”

New manufacturing innovations such as flex-track drilling in the body and wing panels, automated floor drilling and wings painting equipment also contributed to the increased efficiency, said Boeing.

“Employee involvement teams have been critical to the rate increase,” Fancher said. “Ideas from those teams are saving time while improving quality and safety.”
In the past 31 months, the 777’s production rate has risen twice—first from five to an all-time high production rate of seven in 2011, and now to another new record of 8.3 airplanes per month.

Boeing has delivered 1,066 triple-sevens to date and it has collected orders for 1,431 from 66 customers.

Boeing delivers 17 787s since FAA approval

It has been a year since aviation authorities gave their stamp of approval for the Boeing Co.'s 787 Dreamliner, clearing the way for the jetmaker to deliver the mostly composite jet to airlines around the world.

"Receiving those documents marked a real turning point for the 787 program and was an historic milestone for the Boeing Company," Larry Loftis, general manager of the 787 program said in a statement.

A month after the Federal Aviation Administration certified the 787, Japan's All Nippon Airways became the first airline to receive a 787. Boeing has delivered a total of 17 Dreamliner aircraft through last Friday. Three of those deliveries were made in 2011.

"It's been a great 12 months for the 787 team," Loftis said. "And better yet, we see a long, bright future for this program."
