  • Eruption in Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull

The eruption in the volcano has closed Keflavik Airport. All incoming flights from America has diverted to Boston. This mornings flights to Europe are still left in Keflavik.

I wonder how this affect ETOPS operations?

KEF is now open and will remain so unless the eruption worsens. The smoke is reported not to pass 10.000 feet, so all tracks across the ocean are available as of right now.

Two Iceair pax aircraft (from Orlando and Seattle) diverted to Boston - a freighter diverted to Goose Bay. I assume they resumed after crew rest. Naturally there have been some dusruptions today.

ETOPS operation is quite normal, but a loss of Icelandic alternates limits the tracks that can be used by non-ETOPS traffic. Routing over the south og Greenland and straight to Scotland should be usable.
