In a continuing remarkable achievement, the development of Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport (YBWW) is quickly taking shape, with the runway foundations expected to be complete by the end of March. The works will precede the laying of asphalt in April.

It's a bit of misinformation that this new airport has anything to do with Brisbane or Brisbane Airport. Wellcamp, it's physical location, is a rural district a little to the west of Toowoomba. It's ICAC name is to be Brisbane West Wellcamp but that's where the Brisbane connection starts and finishes. I assume that the name was chosen for marketing reasons and perhaps also because it will inevitably become another alternate to Brisbane International for aircraft up to B747 size. It is being built by a local private company at a cost of more than $100 million. Like all airport developments it is copping it's fair share of resistance from residents under the flight path.

As an aside, the owners of Brisbane International had to be dragged kicking via a vicious press campaign into finally building the parallel runway that YBBN badly needs. It won't be finished until 2020 but is needed now. They pleaded shortage of funds for years but in that time have been able to fund huge new parking stations and retail precincts at the airport. The press campaign featured a link to FR24 to allow people to see the congestion over Brisbane every night.
