  • Overspeed MD11?

I just discovered this site, but I have to say I find it endlessly fascinating to be able to click and see all of these flights around the world.

I've seen a couple of things that struck me as odd though. One flight I found, CMB1568 reg. N272WA, an MD11 was traveling at over 650 mph, but a quick google search shows the maximum cruising speed of the MD11 to be 587 mph.

I'm just curious, is it actually possible for an MD11 to go that fast or was there some kind of glitch or something causing a false reading? Sorry if this is a basic question.

I'm sure that the displayed speed is groundspeed. In which case, a strong jetstream will significantly increase the groundspeed if it's a tailwind.

Thanks. I had a feeling that it might be jetstream related, but I was not sure that's how it works.
