i was at the airport in dublin yesterday and i seen an air france cargo 747 taxi out and take off and i noticed the flaps were hanging right down. yet other big jets like the a330 and 777 dont do this why is this with the 747?

It gives the aircraft more lift on take off and lowers the stall speed.

      And efficiency.

Newer aircraft tho as large, are lighter and have more powerfull engines. As a result they do not need the same amount of wing surface for lift.
