Iberia has approved the creation of its own ‘low-cost’ airline. ‘Iberia Express’ which the company had previously registered is the new subsidiary which will operate ‘part of the short and medium haul network’.
The board, presided by Antonio Vázquez, reached the decision on Thursday and plan for the new company to start operations in the summer of 2012, initially with four A320 planes, and expanding to 13 planes by the end of the year. All the planes will come from the current Iberia fleet.
Iberia says that the new airline has been born to ‘compete efficiently’ in the Spanish domestic market and also in Europe, and says it will not affect their current collaboration agreements with Vueling and Air Nostrum.
The company also said ‘The creation of Iberia Express will not affect the employment terms and conditions of current Iberia employees’. But the plan is to have ‘very low’ operating costs, and so new personnel will be employed at market rates and the use of the planes will also be optimised. Maintenance and handling will initially be handled by Iberia.
