    As more info comes to light, its possible the fuel cutoff was triggered by a bag. And soft auto-rotate landing possibly not easy to escape for those onboard not familiar.

    It begins:

    On 8 March 2014, a Boeing 777 aircraft operated as Malaysia Airlines flight 370 (MH370) was lost during a flight from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to Beijing in the People’s Republic of China carrying 12 crew and 227 passengers. The search for the missing aircraft commenced on 8 March 2014 and continued for 1,046 days until 17 January 2017 when it was suspended in accordance with a decision made by a tripartite of Governments, being Malaysia, Australia and the People’s Republic of China.
    The initial surface search and the subsequent underwater search for the missing aircraft have been the largest searches of their type in aviation history. The 52 days of the surface search involving aircraft and surface vessels covered an area of several million square kilometres. A sub surface search for the aircraft’s underwater locator beacons was also conducted during the surface search.

    International airports hit by computer system crash

    MORE than 100 airports around the world have seen flights delayed after a systems crash, with Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra airports also affected.

    PLANE passengers at a more than 100 international airports are suffering major disruptions after computer check-in systems crashed.

    There are reported problems at airports including London’s Gatwick, Charles de Gaulle in Paris, Changi in Singapore, Johannesburg, Zurich, New York, South Korea, South Africa, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra in Australia, as well as Washington DC’s Reagan Airport.

    Passengers have been enduring long waits at check-in desks for flights on British Airways, Air France, KLM, Qantas, Lufthansa and Southwest airlines.

    In Melbourne, travellers tweeted that there were problems for those with flights booked at Qatar Airways and Qantas.

    Melbourne Airport has tweeted that check-in is now proceeding.

    The problem is affecting Amadeus Altea check-in software, The Telegraph UK reports.

    It is used by 125 airlines, both at airports and online.

    Heathrow Airport has confirmed that airlines at terminals 2, 3 and 4 have been experiencing systems problems.

    “A small number of airlines are currently experiencing intermittent issues with their check-in systems at airports around the world — including at Heathrow,” a spokeswoman said.

    “Passengers will still be able to check-in for their flight, although the process may take slightly longer than usual.

    “We are working closely with our airlines to help resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

    VH-BDB. Just when you're getting used to seeing it on the map!

    The pilot of a light aircraft and their sole passenger have walked away without serious injuries after an emergency landing in a Sydney park, which ended with one wing snapping off.

    Emergency crews were called to Hoxton Park, in the city's western suburbs, just after 3:00pm after the light plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

    It came to rest in trees not far from homes in the nearby suburb of West Hoxton.

    Police believe the aircraft took off from Bankstown Airport and was returning after experiencing engine trouble.

    Pictures showed the plane badly damaged with one wing broken off, after it attempted to land in an open field.

    The two 29-year-old men were on a training flight, with one suffering a minor finger injury, police said.

    ATSB releases Jetstar tail strike report

    The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has released its report into a tail strike incident involving a Jetstar Airbus A320 taking off from Melbourne on May 11 2016.

    The tail strike, which occurred when a cadet pilot applied an excessive sidestick input during rotation, took place on Jetstar Airbus A320 VH-VGF which was departing Melbourne bound for Hobart carrying 134 passengers and seven crew.

    It was the cadet pilot’s first flight as the pilot flying. Alongside him in the flightdeck was a training captain in the left seat and a safety pilot in the jump seat.

    The ATSB’s final report, published on Monday, said the cadet pilot applied the larger than normal sidestick pitch input which resulted in a higher than normal pitch rate and the aircraft rotated “significantly faster than usual”.

    An interesting comment following the article- should there be some kind of indication in the cockpit of a tail strike? Also that the pilots should have notified ATC once the knew there was such an incident, for the reasons discussed.

    This particular airline is proving to be very incident-prone, especially on flights into Australia. There are questions already about why this flight turned back to Perth when there was a perfectly suitable but remote alternate available at Learmonth, that would have nearly been visible out of the right window when the engine failed. Of course there are commercial considerations in having a disabled aircraft positioned at a major airport but there is also the generally observed principle that a twin-engined passenger plane with one engine out is put on the ground ASAP and that means the nearest suitable strip.

    Yet another uncontained engine failure

    China Eastern flight MU736 out of SYD for PVG last night experienced an uncontained left (port) engine failure shortly after take off from Rwy 34L at approx. 10:40 UTC (20:40 local) Sunday 11th June, returning safely to SYD after spending some time off the coast before landing. This departure takes it initially out over the inner western city suburbs and they were indeed fortunate the starboard engine seemed to perform flawlessly.

    'Channel 7’s Sunrise is reporting that residence (sic) in the south-west Sydney area of Macarthur reported a low-flying aircraft and “a banging noise” overhead.'

    Thick fog here this morning is affecting flights so I'm not sure if any parts are likely to be found, if any exist.

    ****There's now audio available of the initial exchange between pilot communicating and ATC to advise them of the issue. ATC ask twice (in order to make sure they've heard correctly), then want a tad more 'technical' information before advising to climb to 5,000 ft whilst continuing present heading;

    I'm not convinced the pilot had the slang term for 'broken' pronounced quite correctly or that ATC were too impressed. As we are aware ATC need as much detail as possible in order to organise and render any and all assistance to the pilots. This controller has come as close as he can to a rebuke bearing in mind their predicament. What was said in the crew room afterwards and will be in the following investigations would be interesting to know.
