        • Guns, cash looted after plane crash

          There are some rotten, heartless mongrels around;

          A small plane crashed in an isolated mountain area of western Guatemala on Friday, killing six men and causing scores of villagers to swarm the site and carry off bags of cash, according to a firefighters' spokesman.
          The plane smashed into a hill in the town of Nuevo Porvenir about 150 kilometres from the Mexican border and was completely destroyed, said the spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons. Four of the victims, including the pilot, were identified as Mexicans and a fifth was Venezuelan. The nationality of the sixth was not known.

            LaGuardia general manager Thomas Bosco says there was no warning that the landing gear was faulty

            • British Airways flight from Riyadh to London BA262, aircraft G-BNLN, made 2 abortive attempts to leave Saudi Arabia 7 August.
              The aircraft climbed to 10,000 ft, stopped the climb, reporting problems with flaps, dumped fuel and returned to Riyadh.
              After some hours on the ground, they tried again with exactly the same results, causing a bit of a mini-riot on the aircraft with passengers refusing to leave.
              It looks from FR24 that a replacement, G-CIVD, was sent to Riyadh and returned to London as BA262Y earlier this morning.

                          • Coroner staggered by failing of aviation authority

                            This poses an interesting question, is the pilot responsible, CASA, or both?

                            A coroner has been stunned by the failings of Australia's aviation watchdog, saying a pilot who killed himself and a passenger should not have been flying.

                            Queensland coroner John Hutton has found the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) knew 60-year-old pilot Barry Hempel had a history of seizures and safety breaches yet did not ground him. The veteran aerobatic pilot and his 35-year-old passenger Ian Lovell died when Mr Hempel's plane plunged into the ocean off South Stradbroke Island in October 2008.
