Smell forces Air NZ plane to turn around
An Air New Zealand plane was forced to return to Auckland this morning after an "unusual smell" was reported in the cabin.
The plane was one hour into a flight from Auckland to Sydney when someone reported smelling fumes in the rear of the cabin, passenger Stephen Barker said.
Staff told passengers that the safest option was to return to New Zealand, he said.
NZ703 left Auckland at 9am but was now back at the airport while it was being inspected.
All passengers had disembarked the plane and would be re-accommodated on other services, an Air New Zealand spokeswoman said.
The plane had to return after an "unusual smell" was reported in the cabin, she said.
"The flight landed without incident and is now being checked by engineers."
